I currently live in nyc and wanted to surprise my gf who lives in London w/ her favorite cake from L'eto - Honeycake -- for her birthday. I spoke to the owner of the cafe, who went the extra mile for me. He helped make sure the birthday surprise was extra special - with flowers, a personalized image on the box, and writing on the cake. This, combined with a prompt delivery at 8:00 a. M., made for a great event. It was a pleasure working with the cafe and would highly recommend L'eto for anyone's next occasion. As for the cake review: it is absolutely delicious and unlike other cakes in its taste and texture! There was also a piece of Napoleon thrown in the mix which was amazing. Great service + fresh baked delicious cake = high recommendation!
We walked around Soho on a Saturday afternoon two weeks ago and happened to be in Leto just by chance - it started raining and without realising this we ran into a cake shop with a chic decor and a massive, absolutely massive selection of cakes. We then chose a piece of honey cake which we wanted to share between us too, and a custom redberry with something tea recommended by a staff member - the cake was absolutely divine. Tea happened to be quite bitter, but a bit of sugar turned it into a tasty addition to the cake.
We didn't stay too long but were pleased by the atmosphere of the place. Service was also good and attentive. Look forward to coming back again.
My friend and I went here, and as a vegetarian I do not eat gelatine, which did leave only a few options to pick from. This however was fine, as we were quickly presented with a staff member who guided us through what we could and could not have. Having decided on the chocolate torte, and profiteroles I can definitely say we were impressed. The serving size was great, the profiteroles were accompanied with quite a sauce, and both deserts were overall good (although the torte had too much powder on top which I had to tap off) I was not put off at all. The fact that we were also instantly given ice cold glasses of water was also a simple but nice touch, as after quite a meal in a nearby restaurant neither of us felt like actual drinks but simply the desert and providing the water was nice. The best thing by far of this establishment was the service. The cakes all look good, as does the food, but often this can be destroyed by poor service. Not at all the case here. The irish gentleman was especially knowledgeable about every product, giving tips to me (a bit of a home baker) and simply displaying his passion for working in the establishment. Should most definitely be recognised by his manager; as I will be recommending on this basis! All in all 2 very happy customers :)
I loved this little place. We wandered in after an afternoon in Soho, and it was just what we'd been craving. Expensive, yes, but then most things in Soho are...in this case it's worth it! I had a divine slice of carrot cake and a raspberry lemonade - a strange combination but it worked. The carrot cake was moist, and the raspberry lemonade was tart and brought a real smile to my face. My companion had a (strong!) pitcher of chamomile tea and a ricotta cheesecake which was absolutely delicious. I only had a taste of her cheesecake, but she has declared that she will find a recipe and learn to make it as soon as she can. :)
Definitely a place we'll be returning to. In fact, my companion's already making plans to introduce her boyfriend and another friend to it.
Service - the woman at the register was a little curt, but perfectly fine, and the man waiting tables was charming.
Ambiance - nice, clean, refreshing. Full, but not overly so - in that sweet spot where it's well-patronised but not dauntingly so.
Definitely recommended!
Having called yesterday, I was told by the helpful man on the phone that L'eto Caffe opens at 8am for breakfast, so I was surprised to see my friend waiting outside when I arrived at 8.07. There were two staff members inside, one of whom was wiping tables – slowing down her wiping action upon seeing us forming an orderly queue outside. A third member of our party arrived circa 8.10 and we literally stared into the restaurant until the table wiping lady finally let us in, with a face akin to that attending a funeral, at 8.15 am.
The menu was mouth-watering and I made my decision quickly, ordering at the till with the sour faced attendant. She was glum, non-interactive and could not have made me feel less welcome if she had tried. Once we had all placed our orders, the sullen faced employee came to our tablet to inform us that the coffee machine was broken – I find this hard to believe in a brand new establishment. We had all ordered coffees, of differing varieties – I suspect Ms Misery just did not want to make three different types.
When our food arrived it was delivered by a cheerful young waiter – what an improvement this was! Smiling, happy and more than willing to fetch the salt; our spirits were lifted! And the food was an absolute triumph, the eggs and avocado - a delight.
The venue is comfy, the menu is appealing and the food is really nice, but the brown haired young lady with the pony tail and the bruised arm would be better off working in a morgue. If you work in a customer facing role, you should avoid appearing saturnine and at the very least greet your clientele with a smile.
Despite the food being delicious, the service has put me off and next time I’ll simply go to Princi.
It was a very nice surprise on Saturday afternoon. Cakes in the window definitely were the reason I decided to have my coffee fix. Honey cake was heavenly and brought childhood memories. Coffee was great as well. So I'll definitely be back for more. Staff was nice and professional. The only reason why I didn't give five stars was the noisy customers, but that's not your fault and maybe it was just my luck.
Cakes are too sweet and staff is boring and rude, especially the lady with red hair in ponytail,no thank you no good bye..not coming back
After our Thai supper, we decided to buy a few cakes home for pudding. Since I was particular glad to see new addition to Soho bakery scene, especially in the last six months.
The cakes looks very attractive at eye level off street and choice is plenty. Though no one offer any service as I was deciding what to order inside the cafe, three staffs simply walk pass, without a smile or and hint of welcome. A male staff of L'Eto took my order from the till, did not realize that was the point to place order.
We took four different cakes. The honey cake was very soft, it was rather difficult for the staff to put it in the individual little box where all cakes eventually go. The raspberry on top of it had run off and after I told the staff, he pick the raspberry up with his bare hand and put it back onto the cake and said 'here you are'. I thought it was not professional, not only unsightly but as he work at the till, it was rather unhygienic.
When we return home, I was about to serve our cakes with a pot of nice tea, I found the little box was not a good choice as container to hold cakes since all four side is upright and when one need to remove the delicate cake from box, one had to break one side of the box and use a cake slice to retrieve it, since there is no paper of any sort under the cake. The cake eventually came out of the box, but it suffered as some of the cake stuck to the bottom of the box.
My partner just had the honey cake, which was delightful and interesting. Whereas I had the caramel slice, though I find it more of a pastry than cake. It taste nice but quite dry.
Overall, cake quality and ambition to give authentic choice of cakes and pastry in a ever competitive market should be rewarded. Those points mentioned above may seem trivial but nevertheless makes a place perfect, able to compete and stands proud.
A place worth to be visited again, especially on the quality of cakes.
Tomorrow we'll have the prune cake and poppy seed cak
I ordered the salad. The choice was one salad for £5.20 or two + a main dish for £12 something.
Only wanting something light I plumped for one salad. The green bean, mange tout, tomato and hazelnut one. The serving was tiny (on a bread plate) and the server even removed hazelnuts from the plate as obviously I had been given too many. To say it was about the amount you could dump on a plate with one dessert spoon is about right.
Still, it looked fresh and appetising. Unfortunately the look outshone the taste. I don't think that it had been seasoned at all other than drowned in olive oil, and no salt and pepper was evident on any of the tables. At the end of the meal I noticed all of the salt and pepper mills nicely positioned on top of the glass counter top - obviously meant for show and not for customer use perhaps.
The salad did come with the tastiest bread I've had in ages. Unfortunately I didn't want to eat bread as a meal I wanted salad.
The tea (earl grey) came in a nicely sized pot and was loose leaf tea. This presents another problem when you're not given a tea strainer.
My dining companion enjoyed his vanilla croissant and his coffee but also agreed that the place was devoid of any real character.
We won't be rushing back even though the cakes look wonderful I'd expect them to leave a slightly unsatisfactory taste in the mouth.
Just tried this place for the first time. I only tried the sweet section so I can't say anything about the savoury salads etc (they certainly looked good). However, the cakes were really excellent. There's a lot of creativity here and some unusual combinations but it's all done with thought, not just for the sake of being 'zany' (green tea cheesecake, for example). I had a deliciously smooth creme caramel mousse topped with glazed fruit, and a light, fluffy strawberry ricotta cheesecake, and there are about a dozen other things i can't wait to try on my next visit - the choice on view in the relatively small shop window is amazing.
The staff are fantastic; friendly and helpful (the exact opposite of some places I could mention).
I wouldn't be surprised if the owners have ambitions to better 'Princi' just a few doors down the road. Based on the cakes I had today, they've succeeded. I hope to become a regular customer.
