Serving up good versions of British classics, Limeburner sets up a very tasty home from home for City workers.

The Venue
Located within the hustle of the City, but nicely tucked away down the stairs at Hillgate House, Limeburner manages to offer just about as much seclusion as the area can afford, making it a nice alternative to the abundance of nearby places of convenience. The interior seems to suggest somewhere that you might want to spend a little longer in, with comfortable leather seating in the bar area offset by relaxing greens and woods in the restaurant. The spacious downstairs is overlooked by what could almost be called a balcony, making everything feel vibrant as well as nicely connected. It’s the perfect place to spy on newcomers, which is always good. There’s also a nice little seated area outside making al fresco dining a pleasant possibility, or even just a coffee away from the hordes of rampaging suits.

The Atmosphere
There’s a relaxed feel to Limeburner, with comfortable seating, friendly staff and cool, soft jazz on the stereo, making it the perfect place for City workers who still expect the excellent service that the location demands. Imaginative prints (including two semi-naked walkers save for Union Jack briefs) accentuate the fun feel, but their monochrome nature ensures that they don’t overwhelm the well orchestrated colour scheme, and help retain a certain sense of sophistication. The fact that the restaurant is only open during the week tells you it’s mainly the local workers who visit, but the stylish atmosphere means it’s unlikely to ever be full of braying types celebrating a big deal.

The Food
Limeburner knows its clients well and is all the better for it. The theme is of British staples done well, so those working long hours and looking for a taste of home will love the beer battered fish and chips with mushy peas, roasts of the day, or the simple steak grills. Starters and desserts are around £5, whilst mains can range from £6 for a sandwich to £17 for a 7 oz fillet steak. Of particular note however, is a chicken and liver pate with chutney, boasting a sizeable chunk of good quality pate served with fresh, lightly toasted bread and deliciously sweet onion chutney that although appears a little watery, is very enjoyable. Also worth trying is the chicken, ham and leek pie that’s full of distinguishable meat that’s perfumed nicely by some very visible leek. It does have an extraordinarily thick pastry though, and despite tasting delicious it can be tricky to deal with – be wary of potentially hazardous knife ricochets. The accompanying mash is smooth and well seasoned, and drizzled in a rich and consistent gravy. Desserts are equally good, including a very rich chocolate pudding that’s deliciously moist, topped with freshly made vanilla ice cream.

The Drink
The drink selection is good, with a strong wine list that befits the location. Rising slowly yet steadily, there are some excellent cheaper options but if you want to pay a little more you’ll be well rewarded. A crisp and fruity New World Pinot Grigio is good value whilst a full bodied Spanish Rioja is a nice surprise. Bottles of wine are really well priced (especially considering the area) at a range of £12.50 - £21. For those looking for a tasty beer, bottles are your best bet with Sol, Corona and Buds all behind what’s a well stocked bar. The coffee is also worth a mention – it’s strong and well blended, and the perfect finish to what could potentially be a heavy meal.

The Last Word
With classic British food that’s done well, Limeburner is a great place to dine on all your old favourites without being made to sacrifice style or service.
