The ViewLondon Review

StarStarStarNo StarNo Star
Review byjohn gough17/12/2007
Stunning interior design dominates Maddox: a top Mayfair club with an up-for-it crowd and an impressive cocktail list. Just remember, there's no getting in here unless your member so don't roll up hoping to blag it.

The Venue
Situated on Mill Street, Maddox is easily reached from Oxford Circus, Bond Street or Piccadilly Circus tube stations. Top designer Sammy Chams has created a minimalist space with room for a bar, boutique club area, an Italian restaurant and a gorgeous courtyard for smokers and star gazers. Decorated in deep reds and mint greens, with lots of seating and huge chandeliers, the focal point is the stunning glass-encased DJ booth at the top of the staircase.

The Atmosphere
Owner Fred Moss, the brains behind seemingly every top London venue for the last 15 years (including Mo*vida, Aura and Chinawhite), has attracted top names to Maddox since opening, including P Diddy and Keira Knightley. Unfortunately, celebrity guests are packed in alongside a Eurotrash crowd, and at weekends it’s hard to get to the bar or the dancefloor. The bar and restaurant staff are friendly and eager to explain the menu or cocktail list, but this is hard to do with the pounding music – particularly when the restaurant tables have been placed directly next to the feature DJ booth. Be prepared to shout to make your order heard!

The Music
Playing the usual members bar mix of RnB, funky house and chart music, Maddox ups the cool factor with the stunning sound system and a consistent choice of top DJs to inhabit the glass cage.

The Drink
Maddox has a great range of wines and Champagnes, and premium spirits such as Grey Goose vodka. The cocktail list is a sophisticated choice of martinis, mojitos and cosmopolitans priced between £12 and £15. The Italian restaurant upstairs serves a daily changing menu of light meals such as pasta and seafood, with great choices like Milanese veal or roasted sea bass.

The Last Word
Maddox offers exceptional interior design, fun music, tasty food and potent cocktails, though it is slightly let down by packing too many people in.
