The ViewLondon Review

There are plenty of places to blow hundreds of pounds on cocktails and champagne, but if it’s the highest tier of makeshift escapism that you’re aspiring to, look no further than Mahiki.

The Venue
Mahiki has seen countless celebrities and royals pass through its doors – the wealthy clientele are as ubiquitous in here as the cocktails on offer – but this friendly bar features a no-hassle door policy. And in London these days, that’s no small feat.

Set on two floors, Mahiki is a sumptuous and exotic tiki bar that's been rightly voted the best bar of the year in London. Handmade chairs, Hawaiian cushions and hand-carved tiki figures dominate the Lanai Lounge and, before the crowd rolls in, it feels like an undiscovered private island.

The Atmosphere
The beauties in here will make your head spin almost as much as the strong rum cocktails prepared by the expert bar staff. Food is rich and the Polynesian drinks are pricey, yet the uber-wealthy crowd are surprisingly unpretentious.

The Music
Playing a wide variety of music to accommodate the diverse crowd, it’s an eclectic mix of surf music and cheesy tunes that gets the aristocracy untucking their shirts on the dance floor.

The Drink
One look at the menu will make you realise why royalty and the rather rich are its stock in trade, but it’s certainly worth delving into the overdraft for. A Treasure Island illustrated menu features large innovative drinks for sharing – think pina coladas served in pineapples or cocktails in coconuts. Efforts have been made to preserve classic tropical drink recipes, while adding new concoctions to the list. Fruity drinks, naturally, fuel the clientele - try their sweet Good Time Girl or rather potent Zombie.

The Last Word
A tropical delight in Mayfair, Mahiki brings the sunshine, aloha-attitude and allure of the South Pacific to London. Hats off to Mahiki.
