What a little gem this place is! My girlfriend and I went to Wimbledon to the cinema last night (first night in a very long time due to 2 children under 4!!). We were planning on going to GBK but as ever, I started feeling like some asian food and thought about Thai. There is another restaurant close by that my girlfriend had frequented in the past but it was very expensive with no atmosphere which would have been a total waste of money!
We saw Mai Thai on the way to GBK and looked at the menu on the door and the prices were very reasonable so we decided to throw caution to the wind and in we went. Immediately picked up eye contact with a member of staff who was serving another table but asked us if it was a table for two which we confirmed and she directed us to a table.
No sooner had we sat when a polite young man (turns out to be the owner's son) came and asked what we would like to drink, we chose Singha beer which was very refreshing indeed it has to be said. I had vegetables and prawns in batter with a sweet chili dip (sounds a bit cliche but very tasty), my girlfriend had spicy fish cakes which were also delightful. For main we had another couple of Singhas and I had green king prawn curry with extra spice and fried rice. My girlfriend had the red king prawn curry with sticky rice and we had a side order of vegetable and there was not a single bit of food left!
The restaurant was busy but not packed and the atmosphere was friendly and bubbly which for a Wednesday night is fantastic. The total bill including service came to £50.68 which is extremely good and I will 100% be recommending this restaurant to friends and anywhere I can promote it! The owner worked here before becoming the owner which was apparently before her son was born, so some great history too.
This is what dining out is all about.....
I went to meet my girlfriend for lunch, out where she works in wimbeldon. We decided to go to Mai Thai.
Walking in it seemed like a pleasant restaurant perfect for a nice lunch.
The thing is everything was fine, the chicken and prawn dumplings for starters were perfect and the marinated organic pork was full of flavour......but the portions were so ridiculously small I was left as hungry as when I first arrived.
Don't get me wrong I have not been brought up in America where every portion has to be the size of a small car but receiving less than 100 grams of pork for a main is a bit crazy.
I live in Wimbledon and I love Mai Thai. The atmosphere is always quiet and relaxed, just what you need for a nice date or after a stressful work day. The food is really nice and the waiters are always keen to help. As a bonus, prices are affordable without compromising the quality.
I went to Mai Thai after reading about it on here but I was very disappointed. The red curry tasted too buttery and lacked the usual sweet/tangy flavour that you expect. It was also too watery. The Thai coconut and shrimp pancake was quite nice, but the banana in milk was not as great as you would think, too sweet and insubstantial.
The service at Mai Thai was dismal, the waiter was almost totally unable to understand English and left me waiting for ages to pay even though he looked at me as I put my coat on and had clearly finished. I won't go back.
Thailand’s a big country, with a lot of people in it. And I often think, if all those people (a lot of them poor) can manage to master Thai cooking, why can’t we British? I mean, it’s not difficult. Well, while we wait for London to catch up with Thai cuisine and for there to be a decent Thai place on every corner, Mai Thai is a good place to feed your habit. Great Thai green curry, crunchy pad thai and yummy bananas in milk to finish.
Mai Thai – I take my hat off to you.
