The ViewLondon Review
A trip to the Mango Room will more than compensate for the depressing summer weather; you can almost taste the sunshine in this alternative Caribbean paradise.
The Venue
Despite Camden’s gradual gentrification from grunge ghetto to the Chelsea of North London, the hectic sprawl around Camden tube is the last place you’d expect to find the Mango Room. In its latest incantation, the outside of Mango Room is painted a sea green colour reminiscent of the Carribean sea itself and two generous formal dining rooms sandwich the central bar.
The Atmosphere
Seriously chilled. From the reggae soundtrack that gently plays in the background, to the ochre and vermillion colour-scheme and the beaten leather sofas in the bar area, the Mango Room has an instant calming effect and is warm and welcoming. But don’t for a moment think that this means slack. The service is slick and professional.
The Food
Sunshine on a plate. The menu is a combination of Caribbean classics and their interpretations that draws inspiration from world cuisine. So, for example, pork loin with jerk sauce comes with pak choi. Traditionalists may prefer to stick to the char grilled jerk chicken, which is spectacular and Camden’s famous curried goat – a warm, rich stew with scallions, glazed carrots and Caribbean spices - whilst the more adventurous can opt for the creamy baby spinach, okra and coconut risotto. The creole snapper fillet with mango and green peppercorn sauce is not to be missed; tangy, fresh and utterly delicious. Side dishes are a must, particularly the old favourites, plaintain and rice and peas.
The puddings are dreamy, particularly the mango and banana brulee, which has an enticing hard sugar crust giving way to a sweet, yet tangy thanks to the mango, cream below.
The Drink
Cocktails are the name of the game and they sure know how to construct a decent Mojito or two. The wine list is a comprehensive mix of French classics and New World.
The Last Word
The Mango Room should come with a Government health warning: may induce a feeling of utter contentment in even the angriest Londoner.
