When Marcus and Gordon went their separate ways after a semi-public spat I feared the worst for Marcus - the old Petrus at the Berkley was simply sensational and I wondered whether Marcus would be able to sustain the high levels of cooking alongside running his own restaurant.
I need not have feared - Marcus still produces outstanding food and his tasting menus are as diverse and well thought out as ever. One standout dish I remember is seared scallop on a orange and cauliflower puree - the sweetness of the orange contrasted with the slight bitterness you get with cauliflower, and the richness of the scallop brought the two elements together to make a brilliant taste sensation.
However I have noted that there are times when the food isn't quite up to the high standards and I wonder whether the rest of his kitchen team can achieve the levels required when Marcus isn't in the kitchen. It is this slight lack of consistancy that is most frustrating, as you desperately want a supreme experience every time and sometimes it's just not there.
The service however is impeccable, with the very last detail considered and never over looked. You can't fault it at all. The bonbons at the end are divine too! The room itself is lovely and plush, although it is a bit surprising that you can hear quite clearly what a table on the other side of the room is talking about - not what I would have expected from a restaurant that surely has clients seeking privacy as well as great food.
Still, overall, it is excellent and worthy of its two Michelin stars. Whether a third will come is debatable...
I cannot put into words how utterly amazing our whole experience was. My husband took me here for my Birthday earlier this month. It was an absolute delight. I have eaten in a lot of restaurants all over the world and nothing has compared to this. I cannot tell you all about it as I have told the story so many times to all my friends and family, and you really need to experience it for yourself. The icing on the cake was being taken round the kitchen at the end of the evening to talk to the chef and taste some of the ingredients, and watch the pure skill and love involved in plating up. Which happened to be the starter I had just enjoyed (scallops, cod, white chocolate, blue cheese, macadamia nuts and nastertion leaves). Need I say more. My only tiny little complaint is the restaurant surroundings. It is a bit old fashioned and stuffy. Old is good in a Hotel Costes kind of way, but not plain old hotel dining room way. But when the food, and the staff are that good, quite frankly who cares. Marcus Wareing is a mouth watering genius. Thank you for such a wonderful evening.
I went to this restaurant for lunch just before Christmas. It was fantastic! We had the lunch menu at only £35.00 each for three courses what a bargain!
I visted the same restaurant in 2007 when it was Petrus - I believe Marcus Wareing was the chef then too.
The food was of course the same standard as before, I would expect nothing less from Mr Wareing. The presentation of the food is amazing and it was all delicious - we even had egg custard tart, like the one he cooked for the Queen on Great British menu.
The room is the same as before - a dark red colour but at lunchtime the room is still very bright.
I felt that the service was better, friendly yet discrete. Even the wine waiter was good - there was no pressure to buy an expensive bottle.
I will be going back but this time planning a dinner!
