I went here with my husband for our wedding anniversary. The food was good, but there was a major problem - I chomped down on a big chunk of broken glass in the bread (which was otherwise delicious by the way) At first I thought I'd lost a filling, but then when I fished the glass out of my mouth I realised that it was a piece of a broken wine bottle. I was then very concerned at whether I might have swallowed any more glass - I had nearly finished the bread when I found the piece of glass. It put a bit of a damper on our anniversary meal. I showed it to the waitress and she didn't seem particularly concerned, she just said that they didn't make the bread, but bought it in so she seemed to feel that the restaurant didn't have any responsibility for the bread. We finished our meal which was perfectly good and ordered the bill. I had expected to get some sort of discount considering that I was still concerned that I might have to go to casualty at some point during the next few hours, but instead, they gave my husband a free glass of wine. And that was all! I have not been back.

I used to run a nearby pub to market and ate hear on regular basis and i have to say that this was without a doubt the consistently best place to eat in camden. This was always a great place to bring friends and family or most frequently a great place for me and the missus to have a guaranteed great meal. The staples such as the onglet or the chicken and ham pie never failed to impress but there was such a great selection of changing dishes i could have eaten here every day if my salary or cholesterol levels allowed me. As for the service, always brilliant, Denise is such a wonderful hostess and someone who takes real pride in her restaurant. In short this is the kind of place that every neighbourhood should have, great food and a great atmosphere, no wonder the restaurant critics love it and i used to spot Fay Maschler there on non review nights. Damn wish it was still my local

Ate here with my boyfriend around 3 months ago and totally forgot to put a review. Didn't know what to expect as they told us they were full but then they found a small table for 2 in the middle of the restaurant. I had my doubts, but once we sat down I really loved it. The wine was amazing (although a bit expensive), I think around 30 per bottle. The service was intimate and attentive and they had a nice character, not to loud and in your face but on hand when needed. I think the host was an older man, so not sure if that has changed. The food was amazing, having eaten in most places in Camden (york and Albany the best, the Hawley arms the middle and Gilgamesh the worst) I would rate this as one below York and Albany. Perfect for couples but I don't know if it would be suitable for large parties as the place is pretty tightly packed. Would definitely go back their again but only on an occasion due to the price, think it was around 90 for the two of us, so not terrible.

I have just read the reviews below and am shocked! I have eaten in The Market 5 times in the last year and have unfortunately been turned away a few more times as they were too busy! I have never found the food to be anything than great with very rustic, filling and great value meals. The staff are very courteous and busy as the restaurant has always been packed when I have been. So this may have led to the frantic antics seen below. I feel sorry for the people below who have had bad experiences there as I would happily say it is the best restaurant in London. Please do not be put off by the comments below and go to the Market. Gilgamesh is all about looks and perception whereas the Market is about value and honesty. Thanks, Adam

The person who wrote the review below, is exactly the same person who wrote the only other false, made up review with some imaginative and extremely hopeful 5 Star rating. If you could go back to your job and stop writing reviews to big up your horrible restaurant, maybe you wouldn't be in this position and people would actually want to go and eat there!

Dear CHR, You are obviously very naive and like to assume things rather than find out the facts...I am sorry for this and would like to apologise on behalf of your parents. I don't work for the Market but do work in Camden and have tried most of the other restaurants in the area and can happily say that the Market is the best value with the greatest food. So much so that I took our company there for our Christmas meal....you don't sound co clever and know it all now do you. This is a real review by an independent person so think you need to think before you write next time. Thanks AJG

Competition for Gilgamesh? What?I'd be celebrating if this place went of our business.

The food was like warmed-up microwaved food that tasted of nothing. Sloppy, greasy sauces, sticky basmati and poor service came on top.

What a shame they have staff to write the previous review to save their reputation....

I have been to this restaurant 6 times in the last 12 months, at lunch time and in the evening, and in numbers ranging from 2 to 6, and it's been a real treat every time. The food is wonderfully fresh, beautifully cooked, and both the vegetarians and the fish eaters among us have enjoyed the food very much indeed.
Service has been consistently good, welcoming friendly and helpful.
All in all, it's a great, buzzy but not loud, value for money place to go, and I'll be back there in two weeks' time.

Don't ever go to this place with a vegetarian - we went last night and although everyone else's food looked and apparently tasted great, the only veggie main course option was blatantly no more than an afterthought in concept, taste and execution: a puddle of overcooked risotto with a stingy five small pieces of boiled-to-a-mush pumpkin in it, the whole tasting more of salt than anything else. At £11.50, this is not acceptable.
Everything else was cool though.

A great place to have a special evening ruined.

Hoping to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday in peace, I asked ahead whether it would be ok to bring our own cake (made by my mother), to which the response was 'yes'.

So far so good.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a slightly neurotic woman, possibly the manager. It later transpired that she was actually the owner, though the staff were reluctant to give us her name. At first her neurotic behaviour seemed to contribute to her efficient manner.

Twenty minutes into the evening we were asked whether we were ready to order drinks, though no one had bothered to bring us the drinks menu. And that's on a Tuesday night when the restaurant was half empty anyway (something to consider as well).

The food was decent, nothing special ('no frills' as described by the restaurant's website). The prices were not horrendous but not as reasonable as suggested considering the food.

The wines--where do I start? Not only were they out or almost out of every decent bottle, our white wine was left unchilled without a bucket for at least twenty minutes, in spite of our numerous requests.

The cake was brought out as requested and we were left with four large pieces which we asked that they kindly pack (separately). Our waitress seemed to have no problem with this.

The manager/owner then brought the cake out as one piece, slamming it on the table and snapped 'you'll have it as one piece, as you brought it'.

That was really the last straw. Not that we minded their inability to pack the cake, the attitude was really rude and unpleasant at the end of what should have been a lovely birthday dinner. All that was needed was a 'sorry guys, we can't do that for you due to lack of staff and/or materials'.
