The ViewLondon Review
More-ish Middle Eastern.
The Venue
A few steps away from the Oxford Street madness feels like a different world, so much so that you might be tempted to eat outside a la abroad mentality. However, seating only about 20 people inside, this could be the only option on a popular day. A private party would be the perfect solution if you get together a crowd and book ahead.
The Atmosphere
Tables under the heaters are comfortably close, even more of a squeeze on the long group bench in the restaurant. The welcoming group of chefs and waiters are stationed behind the bar, on meat carving duty, as door monitor or below stairs in the kitchen. All posts covered; service is swift.
The Food
Don’t judge by the neighbouring La Tasca, there are no frozen dishes masquerading as fresh tapas here, just authentic Lebanese mezze. The menu has a selection of contemporary twists on classics, from the hot and cold starters to larger main dishes fresh from the grill. Play it safe with the moussaka (£3.50) or opt for the more inventive chutney style aubergine concoction with sweet pepper and lemon (slightly strange grilled taste). The pomegranate seeds on top throw another ingredient onto the plate, maybe one too far. The meatballs are also unexpectedly presented in a cracked wheat case (slightly superfluous stodge), distracting from the mince and pine nut mix inside. And if you think feta is best eaten in cubes from a watery packet, be converted with the Mediterranean salad (£5.50). Superlatives excused, try this crumbliest creamiest grating over a big bowl of crisp leaves and you’ll never go back. Toppings are the theme of the day, with shwarma coming out on top… of an earthenware dish brimming with thick hummus, a substantial accompaniment to tasty slivers of lamb.
The Drink
Wine is reasonably priced (from £13.50) and the drinks list is short but sufficient. More exciting options include lassi - a reflection of the Arabian influence, traditional style mint tea, and a choice of flavoured shisha pipes to round off the meal. Expect to pay about £20 for the shisha.
The Last Word
The perfect place to drop by when you’re all shopped out.
