We visited The Maze Grill in January, it was a gift from my son & daughter in law. Being a fan of Gordon Ramsey I was really looking forward to a very nice evening with great food. We arrived early after going to the theater, the reception staff assured us it was no problem and showed us to our table.. A waitress quickly arrived with an ipad for us to order wine and handed us the fixed price set menu. Now bearing in mind we had a gift voucher which they were aware of the fixed price menu would never have reached the £150 voucher we held. I explained that I had never held an ipad and asked did they have an a la carte menu. After a quick ipad lesson the menu arrived on what was no more than a paper place mat. The waiter wanted our wine oredr quickly and thenm returned to almost demand our food order. To say he was somewhat snooty would be an understatement.
Our food arrived and to be fair it was very nice. My disppointments were the chips, at £4.00 for a small portion not good value, also everything seemed to be over seasoned. I also would have prefered my meal on a plate rather than an upmarket wooden chopping board.
Following a couple of rather average cocktails the same waiter arrived with our bill and seemed anxious for us to vacate. Now I would state we are not young 20 - 30 somethings as were a vast majority of diners, we are both nearing retirement, we were not wearing unsuitable clothing or bearing tattoos, but to be rushed out by 8pm, should I be retiring to my bed early at this stage in my life.
The worst thing is I emailed Gordon Ramseys head office, aknowledged No. I would suggest instead of spending his time fixing the failing restaurants in the USA, he spend some time fixing his own. Sorry Gordon, as a chef and business owner I was not impressed.
We dined at the Maze Grill this week. On a positive note, the staff were superb - from the cloakroom attendants, waiting staff , and sommelier - all charming without being obsequious. The atmosphere was pleasant - light and roomy and pleasant decor.
The puddings were excellent - in fact some of the best we have ever tasted and the starters were well presented and delicious.
However, we were disappointed with the mains. We had lobster and steak and approx 6 sides dishes. The lobster was fresh and very good and the steaks fairly good (admittedly we have tasted better in Argentina) - however the food was lukewarm and this was a huge disappointment. I like my food piping hot and would have complained but for the fact I didn't want to spoil the meal for my son's benefit. The other problem was that the food seemed to be covered in garlic salt - which I hate. Good, fresh produce does not need garlic to enhance its taste.
We will be dining there again as the experience itself was pleasant, but this time will insist on hot food and minimal garlic added to it.
We had breakfast at Maze Grill on 23.04.2011 just because of having a breakfast designed by Gordon Ramsay. We really disappointed, it was like a normal hotel breakfast nothing more mostly less. Even the quality of food was also surprisingly lower than expected quality starting from bacon through the fruits. Our latest visit to London mainly focused on Gordon Ramsay's restaurants and pubs, be honest I thought that Gordon Ramsay is only a label and invested to right locations but food/dining is indifferent with the ones at the same level/quality, at the end it was not worth to spend our limited time in London and of course not worth to pay that much value...
We arrived 10 minutes early for our 9 pm booking but were given a warm welcome and taken straight to our table. Nice atmosphere and a generally good feel. Ordered a bottle of red wine (one of the less expensive but not the cheapest). We felt is was cold and reported this to the staff. The wine waiter arrived and explained that all the wine is kept at 17 degrees and that was that.. We suggested is should be room temperature to be told is was a warm day and thats why we imagined the wine was cold. I think if I was sitting in a room at 17 I would ask someone to rurn the heating on! He offered to put it in warm water but we declined as we did not feel that would do it any good and he actually agreed. It still didnt feel right though. My wifes steak was fine and cooked like mine, rare as requested. I had a rib eye on the bone. It was small and tough and for £26 very poor value. I didn't feel I should complaina as I guessed I would be made to feel like I dont know what I am talking about just like the attitude with the wine. We also had french fries at £4 (just like McDonalds only less of them) and for a further £4 got 3 onion rings. How generous!
When we were asked at the end we did say dissapointed. The head waiter came, he was very gratious and offered to take the wine off the bill because he did not wish us to pay when we felt we did not have a good experiance.
In summary, I now know the meaning if the term "a fool and his money are eassy parted". I expected it to be expensive but thought it would be worth it. It wasn't. If you are loaded and have more money than you need then go there to make your own contribution to the Ramsay empire.
My boyfriend and I dined at Maze Grill for his birthday on a Sunday night. We were booked in at 19.30 but arrived 20mins late as we got lost, they were absolutely fine about it which was a relief as they hadn't answered the phone when we tried to call! We were given two drink menus, there was so much to choose from. We went for their house white which was 22.50 a bottle, but was really delicate and pleasant, so we didn't need to order any extra. To start my boyfriend had the anchovies, which I thought were presented in a really cool way, with a card and the anchovies still in the tin. My boyfriend thought it' was a bit of a cop out and looked somewhat disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised and said the flavours worked well and it was very tasty. I had the crab, which was lovely, a lot of leaves with it, but the crab was cooked beautifully and the spicy mayo was very nice. For main my boyfriend had the casterbridge steak and asked for it rare. It came rare. It was simply divine! Cut like butter and went down so smoothly. He had mushrooms and onion rings as sides and said they were good. I had the lobster, chips and ginger ketchup. I didn't really like the ketchup all that much but it wasn't bad. Lobster was cooked perfectly. The chips were rubbish. Mcdonald's chips are better! The lobster came with a salad which it didn't say on the menu, so was a nice surprise. I also ordered a side of spinach with Gruyere as I really wanted to try it. So glad I did. Was out of this world! Dessert. Boyfriend asked for ice cream and got clotted cream ice cream, which he loved but we thought 7.50 was a bit much. I had the creme brulee which was beautiful, as was the sorbet it was served with. The waiting staff then brought over a chocolate brownie with a candle in for my boyfriends birthday which was a nice touch. Very rich brownie though! The staff were lovely and made us feel very welcome. Will definitely dine again. If you haven't been. Then go.
Three of us ate there last night and it was a huge disappointment.
Our starters of a mix of small plates were good: well-flavoured and well-cooked octopus and squid and the oritz anchovies were divine (although to be fair the anchovies are unspoilt and straight out of a tin!).
The main event was terrible! My husband's medium rare steak was rare and they did the whole 'the chef didn't want to overcook it so it doesn't go tough' thing. We know the difference between rare and medium and it's irritating that they try and fob off their mistake by asuming your ignorance. He also fel that he was given a rump steak insetad of the sirloin (apparently it was tough and sinewy). I had a burger (pregnancy craving!) which i was really looking forward to but it was grey and the pattie style burger wasn't bound properly so it promptly crumbled into several blobs of minced beef. The tomato in the bun was cheap, under-ripe and still had a green stalky middle. Worst of all the burger was cold - yuck!
The chips were completely average - we also ordered garlic fries with a bravas sauce. When we queried it we were told our 'fries' were shaken with garlic which was rubbish - they were exactly the same as our non-garlic fries (and no bravas sauce)!
The sides were mostly nice - lovely spinach with gruyere and juicy mushrooms - but dodgy potato gratin which wasn't properly re-heated and stone cold in the middle.
Needless to say we didn't bother with dessert.
Our local gastro pubs do a much better steak and chips with starter for about £30 a head - this was about £55 each and not even worth a fraction of that.
A starter, or appetiser to you who dine out on accounts, is a restaurants first introduction. It is their opening, their welcome to you, an opportunity to sample in moderation and whet the taste buds, salivate the tongue, before the guest of the party arrives, and the main course. And what a main course is lined up at Maze Grill. Steak is a main course. It’s a hearty dish, too manly and fatty and wholesome ever to be considered as a starter. It is the school bully of ingredients, the gatecrasher of a high school party, the beef, the over-trained, steroid induced bouncer of a swanky city nightclub. It is the flagship dish, and Maze Grill, next door to Maze restaurant in Grovesnor Square, flies that flag at top mast. And with this, I skipped, more like, fluttered past the appetiser menu to the mains. It was past lunch and I was hungry for steak.
The room is smart enough, clean, calm in colouring. We are sat in the corner by the window, as not to alarm the other diners. “Good God, look over there. He’s under fifty and eating here. He’s not wearing a tie. WHERE IS HIS BLACKBERRY?” At least by the window, on a fine day, we had a pleasant view across the square (over the heads of the suited smokers standing by the entrance, congregating like hyenas around their prey), and causing the entrance to resemble an outdoor Star in Their Eyes doorway. “And tonight Matthew I’m going to be…”Let me simplify, there is Herefordshire and Aberdeen Angus steak (25 and 28-day matured), corn-fed Creekstone from America (35-day), a Casterbridge (21-day and Britain’s first grain-fed) and a Wagu, priced at £110 (that’s just for the meat) which has been wrapped in cotton wool, swaddled, and then massaged to death by some Japanese medicine master. An example of each cut is shown to you by a member of staff, wheeled over to your table on a presentation board, the meat wrapped in white linen and the degrees of marbling on display. It’s the presentation and overall fascination and care o
I booked this restaurant as a special treat for my 7 year old daughter’s birthday.
From the moment we arrived to the end of our evening I could not fault anything, my two children were made to feel welcome and all the staff were very friendly towards them.
We ordered a couple of small plates to share and the soft shell crab, all excellent !, the excellent food continued to main course and dessert, so much my 11 year old son finished his whole lobster, which I must admit my wife and I thought he would not finish and the would be some for us to try !
I am not a wine expert but checked out the wine list before we left and selected a pink champagne to toast the birthday girl and a white for our main meal, my pronunciation of the wines names was not very good but the wine waiter made me feel at ease and knew what I wanted and even complemented me on the choice of the wine.
Thanks to all at the Maze Grill for a wonderful evening, made my daughters birthday very special
Savio and four very happy Maze Grill fans....we will be back
I went on a Saturday afternoon. Nice, fresh décor, great presentation, efficient service. Not crazy about the Kraft paper menus, a little too-too in my book.
The presentation of the different beefs of the world was a little long and the server could not tell me how American beef got into the European Union.
The dishes were very nicely done and presented but I had to send my lamb back to be cooked a little more.
It's not a place I would frequent and I'm less crazy about Gordon Ramsay's kitchen than I am about others'.
I have been to the main restaurant twice before and been very pleased with the quality of both the food and service.
However, I was very disapointed to take a business colleague to the bar area (to the left hand side of the entrance) last night.
The service was appalling. The door/cloakroom staff seemed half asleep and not at all welcoming.
When sitting in the bar we had to wait ages to receive a drinks menu and were made to feel very much as if we weren't particularly welcome there.
Perhaps this was something to do with the fact we weren't dressed like the typical over-suited and booted Mayfair clientele that this place clearly pines for.
After being denied seats at the bar area on being advised that they were reserved out all night (even though most seats were unoccupied and the bar was generally empty) we decided we were not welcome ad decided to settle up and leave.
Unfortunately, this also took another long wait trying to get the attention of the self-important barman before he finally produced the bill. I will not be visiting this snooty bar again.
We went to the Maze grill for lunch with the use of £50.00 voucher given to me as a birthday present.
The food was amazing and delicious, one of the best meals we have ever had. The service was brilliant - quick, efficient and friendly.
Staff very intentive but not overbearing as in some restaurants.Liked the beef being shown to us before ordering and having all explained to us.
The meal was lovely and if you chose the lunch menu great value. We chose from the a al carte menu but still not pricy.
the icing on the cake was the tour of the kitchen just before we left. Brilliant! If only Gordon had been there!!!Will definetly go again. Can't wait!
I had a meal with friends last week and was extremly desappointed
by the standard of food at Maze, very over price, poor value for money and badly executed.
The service and the wine however was excellent.
- crab cakes were spongy with very little crab flavour, i send them back and received delicious soft shell crabs but at £ 11.50 a plate you expect a bit better than Iceland standard crab cakes.
- i choose the 10oz aberdeen angus rib eye Medium to rare with chopped egg bearnaise (which i love with steak)
the rib eye was overcooked and under weight by at least 2onces, poorly seasoned, the chopped egg bearnaise was a runny sauce with few bits of herb inside ( not a Bearnaise by any standards and no traces of hard boiled egg either)
- i ate the dessert but it was so dull and uninspiring i can't remeber what it was.
coffee was good.
I would never go back there, will tell most of the people i know...... and thank god i was not paying the bill.

Our dining experience was superb. The ambience and service were impeccable. The food---what an explosion of tastes. Truly a wonderful meal. Next time we visit London you are on our list. We are from the San Francisco area, any chance of opening a restaurant there??
My boyfriend and I ate at Maze Grill over the weekend and were very impressed. To be honest it ended up being a bit of a treat as the meal was still very expensive - £100 for 2 people and we only had one glass of cheapish wine but we were happy to pay the money as the food was delicious and the staff were really friendly.
We're going to go again after payday but next time we're going to book a table for later at night. We ate quite early and it was only just getting dark when we left. For the money, I want to make an evening of it.
We didn't try the cocktail bar in the restaurant but we will next time and will let you know what it's like!
