No bad cuts, only primal fare, at this converted butcher's shop.

The Venue
A refurbished butcher's shop devoid of the characteristic pungent smell and freshly pinked window displays. While the nostalgic facade of this Exmouth Market joint retains signs of its former function, the interior has been refitted for dining. It now includes a dark wooden bar that runs the length of the place, a variety of chic skeletal metal tables and chairs, wooden tabletops and stools artfully stripped of paint and ceilings interspersed with thin wires that dangle naked bulbs.

On certain days, Medcalf’s dining area extends beyond the room; the cosy, cuboid area annexed to the front portion of the long rectangular space is available when not booked for private functions, and tables are available on the sidewalk on sunny days.

The Atmosphere
The mellow atmosphere of this chic outfit makes both locals and suits from the nearby offices feel at home. The cosiness exuded by its dim lighting, worn tabletops, unpretentious service and comforting British food encourages conversation and interaction all around. Use your hands or your fork, it doesn't matter.

The Food
Well-executed simplicity and straightforwardness featuring seasonal ingredients is the mantra at this modest British bistro. Its philosophies are instilled in its details; from the short but bountiful menu where dishes are simply called what they are, to the non-fussed presentation of the dishes.

Medcalf's sometimes organic British-rooted fare is flavourful without being overpowering, and often, when you least expect, it serves up a pleasant twist – like the exceptionally fluffy potato pancakes that accompany the smoked fillet of trout, tasty bacon bits in the mussels and clams' white wine sauce, or the refreshing spice kick from the Welsh rarebit.

The Drink
For a bar restaurant, the drinks list is unusually limited: it consists only of a selection of young wines from neighbouring France and Spain, the oldest being a 2000 vintage. Even though only a handful of wines are served by the glass and bottles go up to the posh price of nearly £50.00, Medcalf makes up for the narrow selection with elegance and character.

The Last Word
Quality and ambience make the grade in this stylishly casual British eatery. Long relaxed meals are not just easy here, they’re a must.
