We went to Melati on a girls night out and the meal was lovely, great portion sizes, excellent friendly service and delicious authentic food. Since then I went again with my husband and again had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. Again great atmosphere and great food.
Booked Melati, Peter Street restaurant online. On arrival no-one eating inside – now know why!
Starter platter comprised: two miniscule overdone kebabs, 1 chicken, 1 pork, with a battered prawn, couple of sesame toasts, old dried up seaweed, all of which smelt of oil that had been used many times. Main course of beef curry – tough, plus short hairs on it, and Malaysian chicken cooked in a coconut sauce. Chicken on bone covered in skin which still had hairs on , with the sauce more like soup with globules of fatty oil. Looked unappealing, only ate a few chicken pieces I had cut off the bone with a little ‘soup’, as worried about eating more. Rice not light and fluffy, but heavy and stuck together. Only decent thing was the drinks. Charged nearly £40, complained & had slight reduction. Guess what? Early in the morning we had diarrhoea and bad stomach cramps – you have been warned! Lots of decent restaurants in London, no booking required just look inside to see how many are eating & what the food is like, then decide to walk in! Totally disappointing – should have read other reviews first!
Melati is everything you could want from a taste of the orient restaurant that is both cheap and cheerful.
I have been to Malaysia and something as small as my knowing how to pronounce the complicated names of popular dishes, led the to staff to be exceptionally friendly and attentive.
The food was absolutely authentic and delicious. Singapore Laksa was exactly as I remember, rich, hearty and fragrant.
Beef Rendang had such a deep, mouth watering spice that I could have eaten it twice! Char Kway Teow was very satisfying and great to share.
If I could make any attempts at improvement, I would request a little more sauce with the rendang, to go with the perfect coconut rice.
So many people venture to Chinatown but just a few streets away is a gem that now that I have found it, I will certainly be treasuring...Kiri Bowers
Delicious authentic malaysian food - the atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were efficient and friendly.
The service was quick, we only have a 45min lunch break, the food was perfect, no skimping on quality or quantity, Definitely 10/10 !
Will be going there regularly! What made it even sweeter was that it wasn’t too pricey at all! (Check out the lunch specials)Jessie
Melati's food is some of the best Malaysian and Indonesian I've tasted in the capital. I'd defnitely recommend Melati to anyone who's a fan of Malaysian cooking.
