The ViewLondon Review
An ingenious delicatessen and grocer, Melrose and Morgan supplies Primrose Hill’s elite with a delightful range of savoury and sweet offerings from its desirable location on Gloucester Avenue. The VenueMelrose and Morgan’s popularity in such a plum spot of North London means that during lunchtime you could be reduced to slow shuffling as you walk around the central display of pastry parcels, tarts and cakes. However, this may be a blessing in disguise as there are so many fine-looking options on offer that time is probably what you need. The main space is cosy to say the least with only six or seven stools placed strategically into one corner for those wishing to eat in.
Two chefs busily work away on their tasty creations nearby, occasionally disappearing into the enormous walk-in fridge which dominates the back of the room. Witnessing the chefs so closely and taking in the rudimentary kitchen design of the place, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d entered through the back door. If it’s just the grocer’s attentions you require, a choice selection of eggs, bread, milk, fruit and vegetables fill the shelves near the main entrance, all brought in from small British artisan producers.
The AtmosphereThere’s a busy mix of people who want to grab food and get back to the office as well as people in groups or couples who want to take their time and revel in the specials. The chefs and waitresses provide a significant portion of the atmosphere as they buzz around the space, preparing the tantalising snacks and replenishing the central display respectively.
The FoodMelrose and Morgan’s food is out of this world. The pastry parcel offerings such as the cow’s curd with spinach and mushroom, and the goat’s curd with peppers and caramelised onion are beautifully made and brimming with flavour. Other notable options include Cornish pasties, sausage rolls and a variety of pies including the staggeringly good potato, leek and Wensleydale.
The unexpected but welcome bonus is the prices, which are about even with an average high street shop pre-packaged sandwich. If you have time during your lunch break, take a look at Melrose and Morgan’s picnic menu and take your food to the park. Expect to fork out about £30.00 for a picnic for two.
The DrinkA refrigerated drinks section provides a wealth of sensible, non-fizzy, non-alcoholic options such as traditional lemonade and healthy juice alternatives. Selected wines are also available as part of the picnic packages.
The Last WordMelrose and Morgan is a fabulous and refreshing approach to food in a fashionable part of London. Whether you eat in or take away, it’s definitely worth a visit.
