The ViewLondon Review

Meson Bilbao is an authentic slice of Spanish hospitality, with simple and delicious food served in an unpretentious setting at affordable prices.

The Venue
Meson Bilbao is straddling the boundary between South Kilburn and Maida Vale. Your eyes might take a while to adjust to the candlelight inside, but once you do you’ll feel quite at home in this cosy hideaway. Giant blackboards boasting the restaurant’s specials decorate the walls. There are plenty of tables for two, a few for bigger groups and some additional space downstairs that can be rented out for parties.

The Atmosphere
As the decor, lighting and quiet Spanish music dictate, you’ll find yourself leaving the world outside behind you. The waitresses are so genuinely kind and attentive that diners might feel like they are actually guests at a dinner party. Although it certainly isn’t as busy as it deserves to be, those who are here are clearly regulars.

The Food
It’s worth travelling across London to dine in Meson Bilbao for the fish alone; it’s both staggeringly under-priced and ultra-fresh. Simply flavoured with oil and lemon and seasoned to perfection, the grilled squid and the octopus are quite possibly the best you’ll get this far from the seaside and the swordfish is certainly in the running.

The tapas menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming; other noteworthy dishes being the chorizo in red wine sauce and the selection of tortillas on offer. Some of the vegetable dishes look a bit tired (grilled aubergine resembled a discarded shoe sole and tasted about as interesting), but stick to a big mixed salad and some patatas bravas (literally fierce potatoes, potatoes topped with a spicy tomato and chilli sauce) to complement your meat and fish and you’ll be away.

The Drink
There is a great range of Spanish wines and sherries on offer. The house wines (red, white and rose) are under £12.00 and are more than palatable. Beer drinkers can opt for an authentic San Miguel.

The Last Word
Seafood lovers should plan their trip before the word gets out and prices rocket.
