The ViewLondon Review
Put every underwhelming Tex-Mexx experience you’ve ever had behind you and head to Mestizo.
The Venue
The Mexican’s Mexican, this is where their London consulate send nationals abroad. Better still, you won’t find a novelty maraca or an el Paso ad in sight.
The Atmosphere
The baroque-style contemporary space with floor to ceiling windows is complemented by rich, red walls and sparkling chandeliers. Downstairs holds a basement club space with DJs and a long bar.
The clientele is diverse and upwardly mobile and the prices reasonable.
The Food
The menu is long and complex although well-explained. One of the more unusual offerings sampled is chicken in chocolate and chilli sauce, whilst old favourites such as cerviche and quesadillas are fresh and succulent.
The presentation is neat and colourful. Accompanying earthenware pots and the primary colouring of the ingredients make each plate visually interesting. The daiquiris, too, are sublime.
The Last Word
Mexico aficionados often return with mixed reviews about the country's food, and this could be justified by a visit to Mestizo. For whilst each plate is authentically cooked, fresh and interesting, their individuality means they won’t necessarily be to all tastes.
