The food may be good (enough), but they don't advertise drink prices where the drinks are sold (an excuse to rip you off big time), they don't give you napkins or anything to eat with (when you take away) and paying £16.40 for a takeaway for 2 people is outrageous, given the above.
I just had a pork taco from there for lunch and actually it was pretty good. I don't get the bad reviews below. Maybe Mexican restaurants aren't the best place to get a bowl of soup?
The pork was soft, the sauce tasty. I liked the soft, chewy taco shell but don't know if it's authentic or not. You get two taco shells per order. They do charge to add guacamole (I think the old place used to do that too) which is a bit weird. I suppose the flipside is to say you get a discount for not having it :) The hot sauce is pretty hot. Good to have some corn ships standing by to spoon off some of the sauces.
Most expensive soup in Soho!!
Where do I start?!?Went in and ordered a the soup, which sounded divine. I thought the price of £4.50 was a bit expensive, yet it was the cheapest thing on the menu. When they called my order I received 2 bigish tubs, and I asked the man if both of those were mine and he said yes because their usual big tubs had finished so they giving out two smaller ones. I then asked if it was possible to have just one tub for half the price and they told me to talk to the person that served me. When I asked the man at the till if I could please have 1 tub for half the price, he told me it was mistake, he reprimanded the staff making the food, looked at me and said that the tub I received is the correct size. I requested to see the small size tub to which they didn't have any at the moment and I also wondered why they didn't have 2 prices for the different size tubs on the menu. The most expensive tub of soup in Soho and the staff have no clue what customer service is!!
If you're wondering why there are no queues at this place it's because the food is very poor. I ordered a pork burrito but what followed reminded me of school diners circa 1975.
What i got did not resemble a burrito at all, but a rolled corned beef slop fest that had no discernible Mexican influence whatsoever.
Soho is screaming out for decent Mexican food and Mexicali just can't get it right.
The sooner this place goes bust the better.
Fantastic. I'm a Mexican living in London and this is one of the two places in the entire city where I can get authentic Mexican food.
Simple, fresh, yet exquisite. They understand perfectly the elegant simplicity of true Mexico.
The chipotle sauce and corn tortillas are perfect. Seasonings just right, made me miss the west coast of Mexico.
And the fact that you can get a meal for a little over a fiver is logic defying.
Now... if only they served Modelo with a lime, I'd be in heaven!
On a weeknight it "claims" it's open till 9pm, I arrived last night at 8:30 and found they had already closed down. When I asked "Are you still open?"
I was greeted with the girl rolling here eyes and very snarky "No, we're closed".
Never going back to this location. The Mexicali on Fulham Road is MUCH better. Customer service fail.
I have tried out this place twice for a takeout lunch whilst trying to find a place that sells burritos just as good as Daddy Donkey in Leather Lane market.
This place is nowhere near as good. Low quality meats, not tasty in any way and you have to pay for sour cream - it's like having to pay for tomato sauce on your hot dog!
Also over-priced for what you get...In short - rubbish! Take the healthy option and go to Vital Ingredient a couple doors down for the best salad in London!
Well its 4 stars when you can get in there, some of the best Mexican in London.
Portions seem to have shrunk a little since the move up the road, but the burritos are as filling as ever, great combination of chicken (or alternative), rice, beans, salsa, cheese and lettuce. Quesadillas are big and tasty, and the salsa is fresh and great. Sometimes the tortillas are not fresh however.
But the main problem now is it NEVER seems to be open. We went once to find a sign saying hours were now 11-5, then went at 3:30pm on a Saturday and were told it was closing, and again recently and it wasnt open at all.
Im guessing trade is slow, but they will lose their customers if it isnt open to eat in!
I should point out that Mexicali is in fact owned by the same people who ran Beach Burrito Cafe. A forced closure due to the re-development of the south end of Berwick street gave them the opportunity to rebrand the old cafe to match their other restaurants in Chelsea and Notting Hill.
That said I agree it's ominously quiet in there compared to the old place, despite the food being as great as ever. Their vege and bean and rice burritos are awesome! To that end I beg old Beach Burrito customers to return if only from purely selfish reasons - don't let my favourite burrito joint in London close down (again!)
I just wanted to set the record straight about this place - the Beach Burrito Cafe was only ever going to be short-lived, as the block where it was situated was destined to be redeveloped by the Council - and has since been totally demolished. The owner then moved the business further up Berwick Street, and rebranded it as Mexicali - it is therefore the same company, same owner and same food! After some research it was found that the previous "beach" look wasn't felt to be slick enough for a lot of customers, and too rough and ready, hence the rethink, new name and new look. I guess you can't please all the people all the time! Either its too much like a chain for some, or not sufficiently chain-like for others! As for the business, you can't get in there on a Friday lunch time with the queues out the door, and they are still serving over 600 lunches a day. I don't think it was ever meant to be an evening destination, but it is perfect for picking up something on the way home from work! The portions are great, and the food is always extremely tasty. Its all made before your eyes and served extremely quickly - in fact, in less time than many other so called "fast food" places. I for one hope it goes from strength to strength.
