Miller of Mansfield is a funky, youthful pub hidden near London Bridge. The live music and relaxed, fun atmosphere make it a great, if a little confusing, hang out.

The Venue
If you can escape the maze that is London Bridge Station, you should find Miller of Mansfield in the back streets of Borough, next to Guy’s Hospital. From the outside, Miller appears modern, stylish and youthful with plenty of outdoor seating. Once inside, it transforms into a traditional pub but still maintains a trendy edge.

The walls are a mix of pop art style painting and classic wooden beams. It’s a confusing decor that leaves you questioning exactly what the pub is trying to be. However, it’s a cool look and creates an exciting atmosphere. The pub is split into several sections: downstairs contains the main drinking area and a function room for private parties; upstairs is another function room where the pub holds live music. There’s plenty of seating, you can take your pick from several leather sofas or a range of uncomfortable wooden stools.

The Atmosphere
Miller of Mansfield attracts a mixed bag of punters. Situated right next to Guys Hospital, not far from Kings College, means much of the custom comes from medical students. The place certainly has a student vibe but it’s by no means exclusive and nobody should feel out of place. Live music nights upstairs are always lively and can generate good crowds. However the Miller is a little hit and miss, one night it can be packed and bustling with energy whilst on other nights it can be dead and empty. It’s strange and could be a real turn off if you catch a bad night.

They hold some weird and wonderful events here, which add charm and character to the pub. Stranger Than Paradise, Gypsy Hotel and Shotgun Impro are just a few of the wacky events on the calendar. They provide a mix of music, comedy and art and it’s certainly worth checking out what’s coming up. Bar staff at the Miller are friendly, fun and welcoming.

The Food
To further add to the confusion Miller of Mansfield offers a Thai food menu. There’s a good range of options including curries, rice, noodles, soups and wraps. The food really is fantastic and the menu is reasonably priced with most options available for £5 or just a little more. A particular highlight are the Thai curries; Gaeng Phet, a medium hot red curry, Gaeng Kari, a mild yellow curry, and Gaeng Kiew Wan, a medium hot green curry are extremely tasty and are well worth the price.

The Drink
There’s a good range of drinks available. Draught beer includes Fosters, Kronenbourg and Guinness and they’re accompanied by a few bottled beers, including Corona. Costing just above £3 they’re pretty standard London prices.

There’s a good range of red and white wines from all round the world including Australia, France, Spain and Chile. Prices for a bottle begin at £12.25 with the most expensive at just over £20. They also have a selection of sparkling wines and champagnes and a good choice of spirits on offer.

The Last Word
Miller of Mansfield is cool and confusing but it works. The fun atmosphere and busy calendar make it worth a visit.
