Located five minutes’ walk from Tower Hill tube station, Missouri Angel won’t disappoint, carnivore or not.

The Venue
Situated in heart of the City, Missouri Angel serves simple yet stylish North American food. The restaurant is located on the first floor and is decorated elegantly with a light and airy feeling. There is enough seating for about 40 without feeling crammed in, and the windows give a quaint view of the street below. Also located in the building are two private dining areas and on the ground floor is a classic Champagne bar with a separate bar menu available at lunch and dinner.

The Atmosphere
Because of the location Missouri Angel attracts the pinstriped City types, but you won’t feel out of place in smart clothes or in jeans and a jacket. Staff are friendly, helpful and nothing seems too much trouble without seeming too attentive. They are very on the ball with the menu and wine list and offer great recommendations.

The Food
The menu is North American, their signature dishes include Baltimore crab cake with remoulade and red pepper jam and prime New York strip steak served with french fries and Bearnaise sauce. There are also vegetarian options if you are not a meat eater. Starters range from about £6 to £11, mains from about £13 to £28 and desserts from about £5 to £7.50.

To start, the risotto with baby leeks, butternut squash, pea and mint mascarpone arrives in a simple white bowl with creamy risotto on the bottom and a dollop of mascarpone that gives it just a hint of mint. It is not dry at all but moist enough that it slips down really easily, perfect for a cold winter’s day.

The mains arrive on large white plates and are very neatly presented. A lamb rump with Missouri rub, quinoa and zinfandel jus, served pink, is cooked to perfection with a lovely juicy taste. The grilled 8oz fillet steak with wild mushroom hash and grilled asparagus is succulent and moist, very flavoursome and perfectly pink in the middle.

The desserts are in keeping with the American theme; baked New York cheesecake with blueberries and creme fraiche is a large portion with a thick velvety consistency, a thin layer of soft biscuit and a sweet and sour taste of blueberries. There is also a choice of organic ice creams including a creamy vanilla.

The Drink
The wine list is reasonably priced at £14 to £25 a bottle and offers eight options (four white and four reds) by the glass. There is also an extensive wine list categorised for different countries which is brought by the bottle, starting from £16, which is reasonably priced for the area. Staff are knowledgeable about the wine and can make recommendations if you’re unsure. There is also a Champagne list starting from £35 and a wide variety of spirits and liqueurs which are sensibly priced.

The Last Word
Fine dining that’s not overpriced. If you enjoy steak you will love the food here, without question.
