The ViewLondon Review
Miyajima is a relaxed Japanese sushi and noodle bar on Lavender Hill that offers an extensive menu of freshly prepared food in a stylish and friendly environment. Miyajima is the common name for the island of Itsukushima in the Inland Sea of Japan, famous for the Itsukushima shrine.
The Venue
The restaurant is just after the post office if you’re walking up from Clapham Junction. The red and black theme and glowing image of the Itsukushima shrine above the door ensure that you don’t miss it. Inside, the red walls and dark wood furniture continue the theme. Canteen style tables with benches mean that during busy times, you share your conversation with your neighbours. Funky glass lamps hang over the tables but lighting is minimal. A floor to ceiling window at the front gives passers-by a clear view of what’s inside; if you’re at the window table, don’t dribble your miso soup. Once inside, the low lighting gives a cosy, intimate feel. This is somewhere to come for lunch and forget what time of day it is.
The Atmosphere
The clientele is truly mixed. At lunchtime sit next to local businessmen, students or mums sharing lunch whilst babies gurgle in their pushchairs. In the evening, the after-work crowd and local couples take over. Despite the laid back vibe, the service is attentive.
The Food
Miyajima is open for lunch and evening meals; expect to pay around £15 per person for a starter, main and drink. Sushi lovers will be instantly impressed by the choice and freshness. California rolls with crab and avocado rolls are just an example. Pay around £4 for six rolls or £16 for a sushi dinner. There is an ample selection of noodle soups and fried noodle dishes such as Yasai Udon, noodles fried with vegetables and tofu. The fried vegetables have just enough crunch, the tofu is spongy not soggy, and a generous portion fills the plate. The rice that comes with the Yakitori Don (chicken skewers) is perfectly cooked and the chicken is tangy, with a good balance between sweet and barbeque flavours. Side orders of crispy spring rolls, tempura and dumplings make it impossible to go hungry.
The Drink
Fresh strawberry and kiwi juice and Japanese tea go down extremely well. The choice of beer and wine isn’t huge but you’ll always be able to find something you fancy. House wine costs £11.95 a bottle.
The Last Word
First class food in a relaxed setting, Miyajima sets the standard for the growing Lavender Hill bar and restaurant scene.
