The ViewLondon Review
Mokssh has recently undergone a subtle revamp and has not lost any of its unique charm. It remains a great choice for a unique take on tapas Indian cuisine with recipes created using the finest ingredients and spices. The VenueDecorated in deep red and bold purple velvet, Mokssh manages to create a stylish and luxurious look without being brash. Large plump cushions sit on comfortable sofas while some seating areas still have simple, low backed stalls. The paisley wallpaper works well alongside plain painted walls which lead to a separate chill out area. The traditional instruments on display are an interesting addition. The separate cocktail bar is simple and stylish.
The AtmosphereThe staff at Mokssh are extremely outgoing and offer a very personal service. Well informed about the dishes on offer, staff advice on food choices leave diners feeling confident they will not be disappointed. Indian chill out music adds to the laid back vibe experienced on entering Mokssh.
The FoodMokssh offers traditional Indian dishes with a contemporary edge. That said, the portions served are often substantial in size. With over ten choices of starters a mixed platter of spicy king prawns, tender chicken and succulent kebabs will give diners a taste of the high standard of food. The Adraki Lamb Chops are another great choice with extremely tender lamb infused with a subtle hint of ginger, served to taste from the grill, the rare option allows the tangy ginger and mixed herbs to take effect. This mouthwatering dish is well presented and accompanied by a cooling mixed three leaf salad. The Aloo Anar Salad is a great starter choice for vegetarians or for those looking for a healthy option. The salad is substantial and appetising with fresh rocket and bright pomegranate seeds providing an array of colour. The potato chunks are well cooked but not overdone and soak up the strong spicy masala dressing perfectly. The masala is medium hot and has a strong kick of cumin and chilli, for which the pomegranate seeds provide a welcome cool refreshment.
Half of all the main courses are suitable for vegetarians. The Devilled Prawns are a great choice for seafood lovers. They are huge and plentiful but remain moist and tender. The prawns soak up the intense tamarind and pepper flavours. Whilst the dish is full of flavour it is not overly hot and is cooled by the juicy tomatoes served alongside the dish. The prawns are served in a simple stone bowl and accompanied by a small portion of creamy plain white rice. Pilau and mushroom rice options are also available. The Lamb Rogan Josh is presented in a similar way with a separate rice dish and a colourful fresh salad garnish. This dish is hot with large pieces of tender lamb covered in a creamy curry paste with a strong hint of chillies and cinnamon. The tomatoes blend in with the sauce and are soft while the sharp onions remain crispy and tangy to taste.
The dessert options are limited with fewer than five choices. However, the options available should please diners with a sweet tooth. The warm chocolate fondue is extremely rich and because of this may be too much for one person after a hearty Indian meal. Great to share, this dessert is a dark chocolate sponge with a soft chocolate filling. The sponge is sticky but not greasy and easily crumbles to release the warm sugary sweet centre. The mango kulfi, a sorbet style mango infused ice cream, literally melts in the mouth. This dish is extremely refreshing after a filling hot curry.
The DrinkIn addition to serving great food Mokssh also boast an impressive cocktail menu. Champagne cocktails are available in various flavours, including a citrus infused vodka combination with a bubbly orange sugar cube. Red and white wine options range from between £15 - £65 so should suit most budgets. The crisp Australian house Chardonnay is a great accompaniment to chicken and prawn dishes with a distinct sweet citrus flavour and floral aroma.
The Last WordMokssh provides the perfect setting for a romantic meal. Subtle music allows for conversation by candlelight while the exceptionally high standard of food should prove a hit with all diners.
