The ViewLondon Review
“Is Monty in?” “Where is Monty?” “Monty not around tonight?” Within five minutes of being seated it’s obvious from the requests of other diners that Montys is not just a restaurant but also a sought-after man. Popularity is one thing, but does his restaurant live up to his reputation?
The Venue
Montys in Ealing is on the The Mall, slap bang in the centre of town. Less then two minutes’ walk from Ealing Broadway station, it’s snugly situated amidst a mass of pubs, clubs and bars. Thankfully, there are no eye curdling colour schemes or wallpaper to endure. The restaurant is simplistic in style, with decorative wood carvings and authentic sounding, non abrasive background music. From the pavement it always appears to be busy, filled with combinations of couples and groups, eating before going out or after, or simply making a night of it.
The Atmosphere
Friendly, professional staff instantly make you feel welcome and a menu of sizzling, spicy food soon makes a cold day suddenly feel a whole lot warmer. Other diners seem to consist of many regulars (the Monty fan club no doubt) which instantly gives the impression of consistent, good quality food. The place has a relaxed, cosy atmosphere, with attentive, yet not overly intrusive service.
The Food
The menu is clear and well laid out, without the confusion of hundreds of choices. It consisted of your usual mix of the more familiar tandoori dishes, curries, kormas and bhunas with the addition of a good selection of house specialities where the more Nepalese in style dishes made an appearance.
The special kebab is flavoursome with tender marinated chicken and gentle hints of garlic and ginger that doesn’t overpower. Haans ko masu (Nepalese style boneless duck) again has a ginger ginger based flavour but the texture and richness of the duck creates an original dish. Perfect mushroom pilau rice could be a meal in itself and one portion is more then enough to share. Most starters range from about £3 to £4 and main courses from about £8 - £14. The food is quite spicy, but all needs and taste buds are catered for.
The Drink
The drinks menu is fully equipped for all tastes, with a good range of accompanying wines and cooling beers, whereas complimentary tap water served in served in a large jug.
The Last Word
Although located in a part of London where every taste is catered for at least twice, Montys stands out as a traditional curry house with a tasty twist.
