The ViewLondon Review
Italian ice cream is renowned the world over for being extremely delicious. Now the ultimate gelateria has opened right in the heart of Knightsbridge for all to enjoy! The VenueRight opposite Harrods, the gelateria is the centre piece of Harrods 102. Full of luxury products and delicious little goodies, the venue is perfect for this gorgeous ice cream bar. A cream plastic bar surrounds a few jolly Italian waiters who serve you ice cream from the wide selection. There’s a sense of hustle and bustle as you’re eating your ice cream amidst Londoners doing their shopping, yet there is still a cosy feel as the customers are placed so close to each other, they end up chatting away.
The AtmosphereEating ice cream here is certainly an entertaining experience, as the Italian waiters are very friendly, and slightly crazy, but only in an endearing way. They perform tricks you could never imagine possible with tiny ice cream scoops and you might end up getting one thrown in your mouth (surprisingly the waiter gets it in every time!). Also, if you play along, it’s possible that you might get a pretty sculpture-esque creation of scoops and cones that looks so sweet you almost don’t want to eat it… almost. The clients range from City bankers, decadent ladies to large families, the only necessary motive is that the customer wants to enjoy their ice cream.
The FoodShockingly enough, the menu consists of mostly ice cream. As the company has been making ice cream since 1907, they seem to have perfected the art. The classics are done very well, like the creamy vanilla and sweet strawberry. The pistachio has a uniquely subtle nutty flavour that’s hard to find, and the low fat yogurt tastes just a rich as any other ice cream, just without the guilt. There are some breakfast treats such as croissants and granola and also some toasted paninis and antipasto for any time of the day you’re feeling peckish. But of course, the ice cream sundaes are the most interesting thing on the menu. You can choose from classic for £7.50, special for £9.50 and individual sundaes from £6.50. It unlikely you won’t be able to find something that tantalises your taste buds, but Morellis also offers a service of making any ice cream you like, given enough notice. And for the office and home, if you have a craving, there are litre packs to take away.
The DrinkUsing good Italian coffee, Morellis makes lovely hot drinks, but the drink that you must try is the Affogato di Caffe. It sounds simple, vanilla ice cream and a double espresso, but the combinations of temperature and flavour is heavenly. They’ve also got rich, creamy milkshakes, healthy refreshing juices of multiple combinations and the usual soft drinks.
The Last WordTaking the lead from the supermarket they are part of, Morellis has all the quality you would expect from the infamous brand, but without the fuss and formality, just simply great gelato.
