The ViewLondon Review
The name says it all really at this Mexican inspired restaurant with portions big enough for two.The VenueLocated slap bang in the middle of Upper Street in Islington, Mucho Mas is part sandwich shop part eat-in café. There isn’t a huge amount of seating but they do have a smattering of the all-important outdoor tables for warmer days or hardened smokers. The food is quickly prepared from behind a deli style counter at the far end making it ideal for quick lunchtime pit stops or during a day’s shopping.
The AtmosphereBright and buzzy, Mucho Mas is clearly taking inspiration from Mexico in more ways than just the food and its name. Beaming smiles all round are a welcome break from the surliness you can sometimes encounter in prime location eateries and is no doubt due in part to the fact that the owner is on the premises at all times, adding the all-important personal touch.
The FoodThe ingredients are freshly prepared on the premises and then displayed Subway-style behind the long deli counter making it easy to customise your burritos, tacos and salads. Meat options are kept sizzling hot – take your pick from grilled chicken or steak and shredded beef or pork – and served with an array of accompaniments including hot sauce, salsa verde (from green tomatoes), pico salsa and roasted chilli corn salsa, rice and salad. Burritos in particular are deliciously authentic and portion sizes so large that you’ll struggle to bite into them which do justify the slightly higher prices when it comes to a lunchtime choice – starting at just under £5 with the most expensive option of shredded beef just shy of £6. The spicy combinations work so well that they’re worth persevering with or saving some for a snack later. Vegetarians are also catered for but it is limited with only one veggie choice when it comes to burritos and tacos.
The DrinkIt’s not really about the drinks selection here and chances are you’ll be too busy struggling to finish the vast portions to pay much attention. However, if you can tear yourself away from the tacos and burritos for long enough you’ll find a delicious, if predictable, array of drinks to wash the spicy combinations down.
The Last WordMucho Mas is the first in what deserves to become an empire of similar eateries. Ok, so the prices don’t quite rival Pret at the moment but with time and more branches economies of scale should see prices drop a fraction. Tasty food with the all-important spice factor – we want more!
