The ViewLondon Review
Well-cooked, tasty food with room enough for large groups and a welcome every bit as warm as the curries.
Venue
Half way up Brick Lane you'll find Muhib, less garish than some but in keeping with most of Brick Lane's curry houses. It's larger than many of the restaurants on this strip which make it perfect for large groups and celebratory gatherings. Inside it feels spacious and roomy with bright yellow walls, plenty of paintings and patterned chairs.
The Atmosphere
Service is genuinely welcoming here as well as being prompt with orders and helpful with recommendations. It feels a little less rushed than other Brick Lane venues, and is all the better for it.
The Food
Start with a vegetable samosa and you won't be disappointed thanks to its tasty filling and good pastry crunch - there's no sogginess in sight. You might also like the prawn purée which isn't what it sounds like - it's more of a spicy tomato prawn mix on a puri (an unleavened Indian flat bread). Other starters include bhajis, papadoms and kebabs, all priced at around the £4-£5 mark.
There's an extensive selection of mains, with all the classics as well as a range of chef's specials. Try the lamb shaslik bhuna which arrives sizzling to your table with tender chunks of lamb and a rich, medium spiced sauce with onions, peppers and spices. Another sizzling dish (slightly hotter this time unless you avoid the large chunks of chilli peppers) is the chicken rezala with its thick spicy sauce and succulent strips of chicken. Other dishes include Malayan, Kashmir and bindi dishes with a range of chilli heats, all priced about £7-£14. The naans, rices and sides all make great accompaniments and there's even an unusual but tasty chilli jam sauce which is great for dipping - sweet yet tangy.
You may have already encountered the same dessert menu in another Brick Lane restaurant so you'll be familiar with the ice cream options dressed up with various sauces and toppings and served in decorative pots. If you have room, the royal pot or honey pot options are pleasantly sweet and not too heavy.
The Drink
The house wines are perfectly adequate though there is a short list available too with a selection of beers and soft drinks. Cocktails and shots are also listed for getting the party started.
The Last Word
Great service, a decent variety and some impressive flavours make Muhib a good shout on a notoriously hit and miss stretch.
