The ViewLondon Review
Nakhon Thai’s location may seem a bit out of place but once you taste the authentic Thai fare while sitting amongst the mini palm trees, it all makes perfect sense.
The Venue
Nakhon Thai’s decor is light, airy, and tropical. The floor to ceiling windows provide plenty of natural light and fabulous unobstructed views of the Royal Victoria Docks and the surrounding area. Light wood chairs and simple white and light blue tablecloths are used in the minimalist themed design. The room is decorated with several large green plants and wicker umbrellas, and the centre point of the room is the large hut style bar complete with high wicker bar stools. If you’re looking for a little privacy, head to the second floor balcony area where there’s additional seating.
The Atmosphere
There’s a casual and relaxed vibe at Nakhon Thai, the kind of vibe you’d find eating at a beach resort restaurant somewhere in Thailand. Staff are laid back but professional and helpful. You have no choice but to sit back, relax, enjoy the view and forget your troubles.
The Food
A great vegetarian appetiser is poh pia pak (£4.90), crispy spring rolls liberally stuffed with shredded vegetables served with sweet and sour sauce. They’re light, crunchy, and not overly fried. Prawn sakuna (£5.90) is another fabulous starter. Large prawns are coated with a thick layer of breadcrumbs and deep fried. Again, though this dish is fried it’s not greasy or that heavy. They come with the same sweet and sour sauce for dipping.
If you like spicy dishes, try the gai-gaprao (£7.90) for a main course. The dish is simply stir-fried chicken with fresh fried basil leaves, chilli and peppercorn. Senjan pad Thai jay (£5.80) is a vegetarian’s dream come true. A heaping plate of Thai-style fried rice noodles are combined with fried tofu and cashew nuts. Nakhon Thai’s version of pad Thai doesn’t have the usual thick peanut sauce and eggs overpowering the dish. Egg fried rice (£2.80) is a massive side dish of stir-fried white rice with finely chopped vegetables and egg, enough for two people to share.
The Drink
Nakhon Thai has an extensive drinks menu including Champagne cocktails, exotic cocktails, classic cocktails, shooters, and even some non-alcoholic cocktails. Be sure to sit outside if you make it there on a warm, sunny, day and sip on a potent Long Island Iced Tea or a refreshing mojito.
The Last Word
At Nakhon Thai you can experience traditional Thai food and hospitality in a tranquil and secluded setting.
