The ViewLondon Review
Deep in the heart of Chinatown amongst a sea of competitors lies a tiny little restaurant serving fantastic Cantonese and Peking cuisine. New Fook Lam Moon’s huge menu, generous portions, and inexpensive prices make up for its small size.
The Venue
There is truly nothing decorative or elaborate about this restaurant though it does have a slightly cosy feel since it only seats about seventy people. Decor is simple, walls are bare, and tables are placed so close together that you could reach over and sample something from your neighbour’s table or ask what they are eating.
The Atmosphere
The staff are friendly, attentive, and willing to help you choose your meal or explain an item on the menu if you have questions or need a suggestion. The mood is casual and relaxed at New Fook Lam Moon thanks to its small, quaint space. Surprisingly enough, it’s not that noisy even though you are very close to your fellow diners.
The Food
As with most Chinese restaurants, the menu here is extensive and might leave you trying to decide between many different dishes. The menu is broken down into starters, soups, seafood, beef, chicken, duck, pork, bean curd, vegetables, hotpots, barbeque, rice, noodles, congee (rice porridge), noodle soups desserts. With this extensive menu, there is something for everyone.
Pancake roll spring rolls (£1.80 each) are crispy fried spring rolls filled with julienne style vegetables served with a plum dipping sauce. You might need to order a lot of them since they are quite small but are the perfect appetiser to tempt your taste buds and won’t fill you up before the main course. Shredded chicken fried rice (£5.50) is a hearty portion of rice mixed with peas, egg, and tender chicken breast. The rice is not overly fried or greasy and this dish is a great value for money. Noodles with ginger and spring onions (£5) are medium thick noodles sauteed with crunchy, fresh ginger and spring onions. Though this dish only has a few ingredients, thanks to its huge portion it’s satisfying and very flavourful.
The Drink
There are plenty of beverages to wash down your meal at New Fook Lam Moon. Wines include white, red, rose, and even rice wine, and start at £10.80 for a bottle of house wine. If you’re looking for something a little stronger there’s sake, sambuca or ruby port. Other options are a selection of beers, sodas and juices.
The Last Word
If you’re willing to overlook its small size, this is the place to go if you’re looking for an inexpensive and enjoyable Chinese meal.
