The ViewLondon Review
The New Mayflower Chinese Restaurant is on Shaftesbury Avenue, where theatre land meets China Town, and offers good competition to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. The VenueDespite its elaborate gold and white facade, the interior of this restaurant is fairly simple. It is advisable to book as there is limited seating in the two rooms on the ground floor. However, further seating is available in the basement.
The AtmosphereThis restaurant is busy but it is a great place to meet friends and business contacts because it is not too noisy. It is very popular with Chinese people, even compared with the other restaurants in China Town.
The FoodAlthough the menu at New Mayflower is extensive and, like most restaurants in China Town, offers a huge selection of meat dishes, vegetables and noodles, the speciality is seafood. Dishes like the king prawns in black bean sauce are excellent. Food such as the tofu with aubergine appears to be a vegetarian dish but beware, some of these dishes do contains substantial amounts of meat – be sure to check first.
The DrinkA constant supply of Jasmine tea is on offer and, as with most Chinese restaurants, turning the teapot lid upside down is the signal for the waiter to bring fresh tea immediately. Red and white wine is on offer, and Chianti is particularly recommended.
The Last WordThere is something for everyone on the menu at this restaurant but it is the seafood menu of the new Mayflower that really sets it apart from the crowd.
