Dining at Number 22 the other week, I had as enjoyable an experience as I always have – great food, delicious wine and friendly staff. "Tapas with a twist" can be a hard act to pull off but Number 22 does it consistently. I went on a Thursday for a mid-week catch-up with friends. We started with four different pintxos, while there was the staple one of jamon, the babganoush pintxo was my favourite. Next were the croquettes, not your usual chicken croquettes, one was with prawns and the other artichoke – yum! The two meat dishes that we chose were lamb cutlets and quail. The quail with its accompanying sauce was good, but the lamb cutlets were delicious. An absolute winner. Dessert isn't really my thing, and I found the espresso jelly and cream a bit, erm, creamy, but I did steal some of my friend's chocolate mousse…I know what I'll be having for dessert when I return next time!
This place is a real gem of a local restaurant. A little more expensive than your bog-standard tapas place, but the quality and inventiveness is really worth paying for. The selection of sherries and wines is actually brilliantly priced too; some corkers on there that you'd pay significantly more for elsewhere.
The menu constantly changes, but I'd recommend the seared tuna w/saffron puree and the lamb cutlets after my last visit. Service was friendly and knowledgeable - as ever - and everybody in our party felt we'd been left to settle in for a lovely evening.
Am looking forward to the warmer weather so I can head back here to enjoy the patio out back!
This is a small, friendly restaurant with innovative dishes and an impressive wine list. I've eaten here as part of a group and a couple and have never failed to enjoy it. There's a real sense that someone really loves their food/wine, and knows a thing or two about both. Yes, a touch expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Lovely food, amazing cocktails!!!Worth while paying for quality. Had an amazing time!!!Intimate atmosphere, perfect for small groups or couples. So glad it's my local :)
Arrogant and overpriced.
Staff eager to turn covers quickly. Felt pressured to finish our meal. Not the spanish way of having dinner as we are accustomed (relaxed, convivial and enjoyable). Food however was tasty but overpriced.
Service - Deplorable
Food - Appetizing
Price - 5 star prices for 1 star service
NO Spanish traits/character at Number 22
Oh. .... Food took forever to arrive
Wonderful restaurant.
Friendly staff.
Lovely atmosphere.
Great food.
I eat here all the time and it's the best restaurant in herne hill, really fantastic.
I am struggling to think of a reason to return, the food was bland and un-inspiring. As another reviewer has pointed out, there are loads of better tapas restaurants, next time we want tapas we will go further afield.
6 dishes , one plate of cheese and a bottle of Rioja (£28) was £73 including the "optional" 12.5% service.
Overall, very disappointing.
My daughter booked online for my birthday, but when we arrived they said they had no record of the reservation. No apology was given, no offer of a drink, a discounted meal at another time.... nothing.
All the manager or whoever was dealing with us did was complain about the inefficiency of the booking service he was using.
I had eaten there before and the food is great, but my letter of complaint was not replied to. All in all a very disappointing experience.
Won;t eat there again and won't recommend it either.
Just had a great meal at number 22 - quiet Thursday night but the range of textures and flavours presented was great. Highly recommend the morcilla crujiente, squid and pork belly! Not cheap but worth every penny. Friendly but unobtrusive service, good wine recommendations. It is pretty snug with tables fairly close together, but nice decor, good ambience and really excellent food.
My boyfriend & I went to number 22 last night & had a lovely meal.
The restaurant was full at 8.30 when we arrived. The service was great & the food very tasty.
The only two comments, the tapas (main courses) were smaller than the appertisers & the wine is a bit pricey with most over the £20 mark.
We will definitely go back, compliments to the chefs!
I went to this restaurant on a Sunday for paella, as we had to wait half an hour we ordered some extra tapas.
The first dish we had was excellent (Chorizo and potatoes), but after this first high the meal dropped substantially in quality.
We had a Portobello mushroom with beetroot and goats cheese (which was mediocre), and a tortilla which was poor, the potato was undercooked and has a raw consistency.
Finally we were served paella (Mediterranean vegetable) which has to be one of the worse paella's I have every had, it was very bitter and dry.
For value for money it was very poor the tapas was incredibly expensive and was served in tiny portions (nearly six pounds for one portobello mushroom), also there was a standard 12.5% service charge added to the bill which seem like extortion given the poor quality and high price of the food.
What a fabulous addition to Herne Hill and Dulwich Number 22 is. I ate there this weekend with my husband and two friends and must say that we had one of the best meals in a long time!
The service at Number 22 was very friendly and just the right side of relaxed whilst the food was fresh, flavoursome and delicious.
We kicked off our meal at Number 22 with lovely cocktails whilst we browsed the short but varied menu. I shared a paella with my friend which was stunning! It was served in its own pan and packed with beautifully fresh shellfish and succulent chicken. My husband went for the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection with a wonderful sauce. Our other friend (a vegetarian) went for the vegetable salad - again, lovely.
We finished our meal at Number 22 with a wonderful glass of Pedro Ximenex which was a beautifully sticky, sweet sherry. Wonderful!
The restaurant at Number 22 is a little cramped, it's true. That would be my only criticism. However, once seated the furniture is actually bigger and more comfortable than you'll find at your average local restaurant - and Number 22 is a small restaurant after all!
I'll definitely be going back. I'm looking forward to calling in on a Sunday to try the roast! Highly recommended.
I dined at Number 22 last night with my husband and daughter. We booked a table on the recommendation of someone but the whole experience was very disappointing. The service, whilst friendly was very hit and miss. My daughter ordered a Bloody Mary and they had no tomato juice! A waitress ran down the road to buy one then we got charged £6.00, when my husband's gin and tonic only cost £3.50!
We started placing our order only to be told that the king prawns were not available. Why not tell us when handing out the menus? My daughter and myself were served our starter but after an embarrassing wait it was obvious my husband's had been forgotten. He had ordered calamari and yes, you've guessed it, his order had been forgotten.
The service at Number 22 was quite slapdash and did not improve. It is so cramped inside that you feel hemmed in. The food was okay, nothing memorable but I would definitely not go there again. The party to the right of us voiced the same comments as us. When we asked for a jug of water they said they didn't have any jugs! I rest my case.
Beautiful food, decor and service at Number 22. Will definitely go again. Recommended!
Ok. We’ve got a restaurant but what are we gonna call it? Well, we’re at Number 22 and we want people to know that, so why don’t we just call it Number 22!?
Genius.
I went to Number 22 last week with two friends. We were very impressed with the whole experience. The food was very fresh and full of flavour. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. You can also dine in the courtyard at the back of Number 22. I will definitely be going back.
