I went to this restaurant for a birthday meal. The first thing that got my my goat was they charged everyone £30 per head not including drinks. The wine list was very expensive but due to its location this was to be expected. To start we had Cod cakes, a standard portuguese dish, unfortunately these didn't seem to contain any Cod only potatoe, the rest of the food was ok but nothing special, eg barbecue chicken and chips. The service was generally slow. The big focal point of this restaurant is supposed to be the playing of Fado (Portuguese folk music) this consisted of 1 man and a synthesiser playing Elvis, the Beatles and lots of other random music in total he played 4 Fado songs all evening but only 2 on a guitar. In all I had a very disappointing evening, the Portuguese people I was there with spent the evening apologising to me for the music, food and service. I certanly won't be going back or recommending it to anyone especially as when my girlfriend emailed them to complain about the eveing she received back a very abusive and childish email from one of the waiters.
Had dinner at this restaurant last week to celebrate a friend's birthday. Most of the people in the group were Portuguese and we were sadly disappointed (and embarrassed before our British friends) to witness such a poor representation of our country. We usually go to Portuguese restaurants in Stockwell but we were drawn to this one, despite the steep prices, because they advertised live fado, which is sung by a soloist accompanied by Portuguese guitar(s). However, we were graced most of the evening by a man playing the synthesiser playing Beatles, Elvis, Mexican, Italian and Spanish songs. Only after 11pm did he sing two fado songs accompanied by a common acoustic guitar. When I emailed the restaurant a couple of days later expressing our disappointment I received a very rude reply calling me arrogant and saying they don't need customers like me, and that with my attitude I certainly don't have many friends! Not typical Portuguese service, I can assure you! The food wasn't amazing either. Best avoid.
I’ve been to Portugal every summer since 1987. I deeply love it there. The hospitality, the wines, the sun, the food…
For the whole year in between I would have to just dream of summer again. One year ago I found O Fado.
Apart from the sun, there’s nothing missing there. For some hours, I’m in Portugal again every time I go there. Thank you Fado. Henry.
We were extremely impressed by the service, meals, entertainment and professionalism. Well done.
We’ve actually been there for my wife’s birthday and we had an absolutely lovely experience.
Wonderful food, plenty of flavour (not like so many restaurants in London) together with a very cosy ambiance made the night for us.
The waiters sung the Happy Birthday for my wife, together with the musicians that had previously made a short but great performance, and everyone seemed to be happy in the house, being friendly while giving privacy, during the whole night.
We will go back any time soon.

O Fado has a pretty dodgy entrance going down some stairs but then it's like entering Portugal. The fantastic atmosphere, dim lighting and wonderful O Fado entertainment makes up for the outdated presentation of food (doilies, parsley sprigs etc).
However, the food was wonderful and authentic, delicious wine and pretty good value! The staff were very friendly but pretty useless. It took 15 minutes to get a drink, another 10 minutes to take our order and 35 minutes to get the bill!
I have enjoyed many evenings with my international friends (British, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Chinese, etc) at the "O Fado" with the lovely Vinho Verde flowing all evening. The food has been fantastically prepared from the real chorizo (not Spanish...) to the famous Portuguese dish Bacalhau (Dried Cod) a Braz or Gomes de Sa.
But the best is always reserved for the end and that must be their Mollotoff dessert - a dessert to die for (even the French have sworn to it!). You can spend a really enjoyful evening listening to Fado music and chatting to friends without the waiters pestering you like in some other restaurants in London. It really feels nice to have a place like this in the busy London.
After having not visited O Fado for quite some time I decided to take my friend along (a big lover of seafood) and show him what my country is all about - oh what a mistaka to maka!
The food was so disappointing - the presentation was not good and the food had obviously not been 'lovingly' prepared. Well, at least the few bottles of Rose were tasty, not forgetting the port -mm mmm... and the staff more than made up for my disappointment when they played fado for us right until the bitter end! :)
