The ViewLondon Review
Ocaso Tapas Bar’s location may be a bit quiet but once you’re inside, you feel as if you’ve been transported to a lively restaurant in sunny Spain. Here you’ll find friendly staff, generous portions and authentic tapas at incredible prices.
The Venue
Decor is dark, warm, simple and inviting. The many rooms are all painted in a deep red colour and tables and chairs are rich, dark wood, whilst walls are decorated with paintings of bright, colourful landscapes. You can sit outside near the street, in the main dining area, in the conservatory or in the private outdoor courtyard, which can also be used for private parties. Ocaso Tapas Bar has a comfortable place for you to sit and enjoy your meal no matter what mood you’re in.
The Atmosphere
Red flickering candles on tables, dim lighting, and festive Spanish music set the mood for your tapas dining experience. Staff are extremely polite and bend over backwards to please you. This is the perfect location for a romantic dinner, quick lunch, group get together or private party.
The Food
Ocaso Tapas bar specialises in tapas, with other Spanish dishes including several types of paellas. The most popular option seems to be tapas, though, especially given the low prices. Gambas picantes (£4.95) are crunchy, fresh prawns in spicy garlic and chilli oil. The sauce is loaded with chopped fresh garlic and mild red chilli peppers, great to dip bread in. Patatas riojana (£4.95), potatoes and chorizo in a thick and rich spicy tomato sauce, is another good dish. The potatoes are cut thick and chunky and blend well with the salty, spicy flavour of the chorizo. Ensalada especial (£4.50) is a salad of tuna, hard boiled eggs, red and yellow peppers, onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes on a bed of romaine lettuce dressed with olive oil and mustard dressing. This filling salad is presented on a large, rectangular plate and is both a treat for the eyes and the stomach.
Patatas bravas (£3.60) are fried potatoes in spicy tomato sauce. The potatoes are cooked perfectly and evenly coated in a thick spicy tomato sauce, their mild flavour brought to life by the spices in the thick sauce. Berenjenas fritas (£4), thin cut rounds of aubergines deep fried in batter, are moist and tender whilst the batter is crunchy and surprisingly light. Tortilla de patatas (£4.30), a hearty Spanish potato and onion omelette, is served as two thick slices filled with potatoes and onions baked in with the eggs. A true staple in Spanish tapas cuisine. Ensalada tres colores (£4) is a fantastic salad of sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and avocados arranged alongside each other on a rectangular plate. The dish is topped with olive oil and is best paired with some warm, crusty bread.
Be sure to save some room for dessert as there are some irresistible, decadent choices. Tarta de queso (£3) is the Spanish version of cheesecake. This dessert, with its underlying flavour of coconut, is thick, rich and creamy and surrounded with whipped cream. Tarta de chocolata (£3.20) is another amazing way to end your meal. This large slice of semi sweet dark chocolate cake is served warm with a scoop of gourmet chocolate ice cream on the side. Truly heaven for the chocoholic.
The Drink
Ocaso Tapas Bar serves cocktails such as Margaritas and mojitos (priced between £5.75 and £6), sangria (£4 a glass and £11.50 a jug), wines and soft drinks to accompany your meal. House wines start at £12.85 and reach £27.50 a bottle, and range from £2.85 to £5.05 per glass. The house red, a Merlot Veneto, is a warming red that stands up to the strong flavours in the dishes.
The Last Word
Experience all the warmth and hospitality of a Spanish tapas restaurant tucked away in Wimbledon. With most menu items below £5, Ocaso Tapas Bar is a very inexpensive way to have a tasty and satisfying meal.
