A friend and I dined at Oishii yesterday evening. Between us we ordered the Oishii Special Tempura which was a platter of vegetable and prawn tempura; very lovely, came out steaming hot, crisp, light as a feather batter golden in colour. Also, Fried to perfection so there was neither soggy or overfried batter in sight or taste.

We also ordered the Salmon Nigiri and the Mackerel Nigiri. Both were just fine, generous strips of Salmon, not too fatty, the rice delicately seasoned with vinegar and cooked just right. The Mackerel was decent also; not too rich but that served at Yoshino is far tastier.

We continued with spicy tuna handrolls and prawn tempura handrolls. The tuna was nicely seasoned if not a little lacking in quantity irrespective of the filing of a maki roll being conventionally a little more meagre; there could and should have been more tuna. It also featured little beads of fish eggs which was a nice touch. The prawn tempura sushi was surprisingly far tastier than I had expected. Again the texture of the rice was good, the tempura within nice and warm, spiced nicely. 2 of the 6 featured a large prawn cascading from the roll which was a nice touch.

My friend had the chicken gyoza fried dumplings which she was very pleased with and were some of the nicest that I had seen. Plump, fried just so that they remained moist.

We also had a side of the Vietnamese Peanut Salad. Seasonings were tasty and the salad leaves were fresh but there was rather too much cucumber for my liking.

The food was very good and the prices decent; our bill came to £42 and we had drinks - freshly suqeezed juice and an ice tea.

The decor within isn't particularly attractive, so I would regard this as a casual eatery. Food came on time. My major gripe is that the staff are a little too curt and eager to whip the plate from under your nose as if they want you out as quickly as possible - and the place was near empty, very off putting.

I LOVE this place!
not only are the staff lovely, the food is great too, everything I've eaten here is served super fresh and hot and full of flavour.

im not concerned with the lack of authenticity, it will never be 100% Japanese food because its made here and im guessing most of the produce is from here so it will taste slightly different but its definitely really good! one of my favourites in the city!

ive never had the sushi here! probably as all the hot food is amazing, i will definitely be having it next time i go!

ignore the japan bore below! I've been to japan too, and they can do tasteless just as well as the brits.

this is a nice fun place with decent food and reasonable prices. good for takeout too.

Best food in Streatham by a mile! Think Wagamamas but cheaper and tastier food with bigger portions.

It's also worth mentioning that the staff are very friendly. My fav dishes would have to be: Starters - chicken satay, Age goyza (meat dumplings), Mains - Chilli beef ramen, Thai green chicken curry, Pad thai, i could go on.

Put simply, if you like food you'll like Oishii.

Oishii is absolutely excellent. I haven't eaten better sushi outside of Japan. However, avoid the bland vegetarian ramen. I've sampled most of the menu and been extremely pleased with everything else. A firm favourite amongst all of my friends, Oishii deserves to be recognised as one of the best affordable Japanese resaurants in the city.

Oshii is not authentic Japanese food, but what I've had I like. I recommend the chicken katsu don for a basic tasty main. Don't bother with the desserts at Oshii, they are overpriced and probably straight from the freezer.

I lived in Japan for a year, so I know good Japanese food, and Oishii isn't it! Oishii offered the most tasteless meal I have had the misfortune to eat.

Forget all those chain places – Oishii is the only place for sushi in London. Everything’s made with such care and tastes so fresh.
If you want sushi, Oishii is the way to go.
