So as you eat, you can be delighted by their dulcet tones ringing out in Gilgamesh’s high-ceilinged splendour.
When
Tuesday 8th May 2007
Where
Gilgamesh, Camden
Why you should go:Is your dining experience disappointingly incomplete without a little something extra in the way of entertainment? A little something operatic perhaps?
Gilgamesh Restaurant Lounge in Camden, whose namesake was half-God, half mortal, is rather an apt setting for opera while you dine. The restaurant’s style replicates a grand Babylonian palace, with hand carved furniture and a tea house terrace, so the drama starts as soon as you walk through the door. As you’re waited on in the restaurant, you can pretend you’re Babylonian royalty.
Who you’ll find there:The new generation of opera fans, having animated discussions about Bizet and Puccini over dishes like duck and watermelon salad and rib eye of beef with wasabi soy dressing. Plus the odd art and music lover from Camden, taking a night off from the sweaty mosh pits and drinking dens to recuperate before their next bout of late night rocking.
How to find it:As Gilgamesh is halfway between Camden and Chalk Farm tube stations on Chalk Farm Road, getting there either involves a bus or a brisk walk. But there’s nothing like a stroll to whet your appetite, especially when culture and dinner await. A kingly five courses and a glass of chilled Champagne costs £59 per person. If your appetite or your budget is a bit smaller that day, you can also order from the a la carte menu. Get there at 6.30pm for a 7pm sharp start.
