The ViewLondon Review
General Price Guide: Moderate.
Location and Punters:
Orso, a well-established Italian restaurant is located in the heart of Covent Garden and is popular with locals and theatre goers alike. The nearest tube station is Covent Garden.
Atmosphere and Décor:
The basement dining room of Orso was previously part of Covent Garden market place and the original tiles of the flower section have been retained as a decorative feature. The warm, terracotta décor, the informality and the genuinely welcoming staff all contribute to the pleasant atmosphere at Orso. The cosy ambience, with tables packed closely together, belies the fact that the restaurant can actually seat up to 100 people.
Food and Drinks:
The menu is bilingual and consists of good, rustic Italian cooking with a few sophisticated touches here and there. The emphasis is mainly on Tuscan dishes. For starters, try Buffalo Mozzarella with Tomato and Basil or Puntarelle with Anchovy Dressing.
Main course pizzas have interesting optional toppings of Goat’s Cheese, Rock Shrimps and Arugula. The Pasta, Roast Lamb with Broccoli and White Beans is another popular main dish or the Roast Crispy Duck with Apricots and Herb Potatoes. Vegetarian options are always available.
Desserts are heavenly, particularly the Lemon Cake with Mascarpone and Warm Poached Passion Fruit. The wine list is entirely Italian and reasonably priced.
The Experience:
Orso offers a winning Italian formula of hearty fare and a hearty welcome.
