The ViewLondon Review
As most of Ladbroke Grove’s Indian restaurants are morphing into dodgy fried chicken joints, take a stroll up the Golborne Road and discover one of India’s finest. The VenueA little out of the way, this Indian restaurant is well worth the walk. At the top end of Golborne Road, with views of the design classic, Trellick Towers, it is cosy and clean, with only eight tables in total.
The AtmosphereThe overtly friendly staff will treat you like a long lost relative. Candlelight, light purple walls, the low murmur of authentic Indian music and the floor to ceiling window at the front, adorned with fairy lights, make this place feel cosy and lively all at once.
The FoodWith over 25 years experience in the Indian food business, the owners have got it spot on. They cleverly cook with minimal oil and no ghee which makes for a healthy and non greasy curry. Inventive touches such as the coriander, mint, garlic and chilli yogurt sauce which accompanies the poppadoms, ensures this family run restaurant is ahead in the menu stakes. If you like food on the spicy side, then it may be best to speak up when ordering as some of the curries need a little kick.
The meat dishes however, are an absolute must. Dishes such as the Lamb or Chicken Shashlick (sizzling, barbecued pieces of soft lamb or chicken with onion, capsicum and tomatoes) and the butter chicken are so delicious that you'll want to take home a doggy bag.
The DrinkThere is a well stocked bar at the back of Palki, but there really is no contest. There is nothing better than a nice cold Cobra beer to wash down your steaming hot curry.
The Last WordThe problem with Indian food normally is the grease factor; luckily Palki offers the taste without the ring of oil. One of the last great Indians to adorn the streets of Ladbroke Grove.
