The ViewLondon Review
Outstanding Thai cuisine in a smart Soho venue... a rare find indeed.
The Venue
Located in the heart of Soho, Patara holds its own in an area jam-packed with restaurants and cafés. Diners shouldn't expect the usual standard Thai fare, dishes here are a far cry from those found in average Thai eateries. This restaurant is part of a chain and yet still has a unique feel, owing to the smart décor, professional staff and exciting food.
The Atmosphere
Expect friendly and attentive service at Patara; staff here seem to genuinely care about creating a special atmosphere and diners are made to feel more than welcome, despite its formal appearance.
Patara has been well designed and combines contemporary, sleek furniture with traditional Eastern elements throughout. The restaurant boasts an intimate atmosphere, lending itself to the soft lighting and comfortable layout. Stepping into Patara is almost like taking a leap into the Orient.
The Food
Diners can be confident that each of the unique dishes will be beautifully presented and almost too pretty to eat. Flavours are complex and the menu excites with its exotic combinations of fresh ingredients.
The steamed dumplings make an excellent starter. These little plump balls are presented on the plate like little doughy mounds, with the promise of fresh flavours within. The prawn dumplings are fresh tasting with succulent prawns inside.
The poached king scallops are also delicious and make a nice light starter. The fresh scallops are complemented with a zesty lime and chilli dressing, which lifts the fresh seafood without masking the taste.
There's a good selection of tempting mains and the lamb shank curry is divine. The meat is both tender and flavoursome and works perfectly with the fragrant coconut sauce which has a nice fiery kick. Seafood and vegetarian options are also available.
The Drink
Expect a modest selection of beers, healthy dose of wine and inventive selection of cocktails. The cocktails have been carefully created to incorporate authentic Thai ingredients and feature a healthy spike of alcohol. The ginger martini delivers just what one would expect: a warming drink with a kick like a mule.
The Last Word
You have to take your preconceptions about Thai food and throw them out the window before you venture into Patara. This restaurant firmly stands on its own two feet. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a chain – the food, service and décor make for an all round impressive experience.
