I am a real fan of Patisserie Valerie so I was really pleased when a branch opened near my university.
I love the cakes and the savoury menu, and this place would be the perfect place to sit down during breaks with my friends. However, what really disappointed me was the service there.
I had poor experiences there on two seperate occasions and for that reason I will not be using that branch again for eating in. The first time, I was sat near the till, and whilst my friend went outside to speak on her mobile, I paid attention to the waiter printing the bill for other tables.
I noticed him writing something on the bills before taking it to the tables and when he returned with the money, he tore up the original bill and printed a new one for the records.
At the end of my meal, I realised why he did this. He added by hand a 10% service charge onto the bill (and it became clear that the reprint was to destroy this evidence).
I would be happy to pay a gratuity, or a service charge if it was company policy, but I felt this waiter was forcing customers to pay a tip without giving them an option.
I questioned the waiter about this, and to my shock, he told me I needed to pay this. It wasn't until I asked to speak to a manager about the incident, he agreed to cross it off.
On a seperate occasion, about three months later, I was in the middle of my meal, when the same waiter stood over my friend's shoulder, and asked us to move to the table next to us, to make space for a table for 4.
When we pointed out that this was rather rude, but all he did was point to the table and said "It's just there, right next to you".
The restaurant is situated in such a convenient position, and offers great food, but it is such a shame to have some poorly trained staff working there. I also noticed that there has never been a visible manager on site. Perhaps, some staff traini
