Have you been to see Peckham library yet? Peckham farmers market is right outside it, and there you have two reasons to visit this steadily up and coming area. There are more reasons. Peckham Rye is a lovely, sloping green expanse inviting walks and picnics in the sunshine – William Blake is supposed to have had a vision of an angel in a tree there. The South London Gallery is full of contemporary art, Bellenden Road has plenty of cafes and bars to relax in and Rye Lane has good shops. Small wonder then that the farmers market attracts a mixture of long standing locals, plus arty and bookish types. It’s not the depressing district that Only Fools and Horses and recent press about gun crime has suggested – it’s getting EU funding and starting to move away from its old reputation, as neighbouring Camberwell and Dulwich continue their gentrification and house prices in the area rise.
Peckham farmers market is unusual in that it’s covered, so there’s no need to let rain put you off. Take a trip to the market to mix with the neighbourhood’s diverse community, made up of an amazing number of different cultures, and reflected in the huge range of food for sale on the stalls.
