The ViewLondon Review

StarStarStarStarNo Star
Review byMichael Spicer31/07/2007
Not as expansive as some branches, this neatly tucked-away Pizza Express on Parkway Camden is more of an intimate venue which embraces a modernistic and - given its location - trendy approach in both the menu and decor.

The Venue
The ground floor provides a more lively approach with the buzz of the kitchen not far away yet the basement area is minimalist and low key, presumably more geared towards couples. The hardwood flooring and spotlighting embedded in the swooping, curvy, pink walls creates a contemporary vibe.

The Atmosphere
Parkway is a curious street and this addition of a recognisable chain stands out somewhat amongst the independent organic food shops and distinctive cafes. But eating here you get a feeling that Pizza Express is trying to remove its corporate identity with this warm and friendly approach. For instance, each table comes with a little booklet explaining the recipes available in a humorous manner alongside artistic snapshots of Italy.

The Food
The new addition to the traditional Express menu is the introduction of the Romana pizzas, traditional, thinner bases, originating from Rome, which allow the taste to stand out. The Pancetta Pomodoro is one of the revived creations from this range and is certainly flavoursome but the thinner base means you should probably do a little weight lifting beforehand and then ask for the sharpest knife they have - it’s a toughie. Plus there is the unavoidable fact that these pizzas are best baked in a wood burning oven and Pizza Express does not adopt this method. But these are only minor quibbles; the meals are hugely rewarding and the service is exemplary too. The rest of the reliable menu is still available and the Parmense, from the classic section, is as delectable as always. The Sloppy Giuseppe is also a gorgeously scrummy offering.

The Drink
Pizza Express provides a varied wine list with plenty of fruity numbers such as the Pinot Grigio and bold reds including La Tunella Merlot, all around the £15 to £20 bracket. The staff here is approachable and friendly so feel free to ask for recommendations.

The Last Word
If you prefer relaxed reliability in the face of Camden-style uncertainty, Pizza Express will deliver here as it normally does everywhere else in London.
