Went today with a friend and was really really pleased.
Despite being an Italian, I am not crazy about pizza and I am quite a fussy eater, so I was a bit wary at first.
As the oven wasn't ready yet, we were served antipasti "on the house": rocket salad and a really perfect bruschetta, crispy and fresh, with an hint of garlic.
Pizzas arrived after about 20mins; very well baked, thin with a crust crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside.
Toppings were fresh, very tasty and scarce on fat - overall, a pizza that wouldn't have disfigured in a Naples pizzeria. We didn't leave anything on the plate!
Bill was very honest and I will certainly be back.
The place is cute, polished and clean without any special attempt at sophistication - even the background music is the same as you would expect in a true Italian pizzeria (think Domenico Modugno to the Gipsy Kings, passing from a plethora of Italian pop from the Nineties and Noughties) and this was maybe the only thing in the place that could use some improvement ;).
All in all, definitely recommended.
i must admit, this place USED to be good a bit over a year ago last year. We used to eat there sometimes twice a week cause we craved the pizza. I think there was a change in management a year ago and since then...i can only say the pizza is completely rubbish. We ordered our usual pizza, with bufala mozzarella, prosciutto crudo and rucola. Let's just say, every ingredient that i just mentionned was NOT on the pizza. Also i don't know where the management thought of hiring their staff because they are definitely lacking in customer service and friendliness. Considering that the guy who makes the pizza is here from ITALY...he probably never made a pizza in his life because the soggy, raw piece of tasteless dough he made was not edible. And the waitress had a huge chip on her shoulder and probably couldn't wait to have the only 4 customers in the restaurant leave.
To make a long story short, i wouldn't even recommend this place to my worst enemy. Waste of money and time. IT's a pity because the place could do so well if only it was managed properly and a good pizzaiolo was brought in do to the job right.
Pizza On The Wood does HORRIBLE pizzas.
Ordered one oftheir specials last night, (1/2 meter + soft drink - £11.50) Firstly they couldn't make a Bufala DOC (no explanation why, pretty basic ingredients) so I chose Porcina & a Terra Mia. When we got it home it looked vile. Greasy mushrooms, greasy cheese, not all of the ingredients were on the pizza, it just looked like a fatty cheesy bread with glistening fatty bits. It was so bad we took it back as it just wasn't edible. Didn't even get our money back. It was worth paying £11.50 not to eat it. To be honest the pizzas we got from Salisbury's not only were cheaper but looked and actually were edible. If you know what a good pizza is I'd avoid this place like the plague, actually, even if you don;t, stay away...
Pizza on the Wood does great pizzas. It is a really friendly Italian atmosphere and the waiters are dead nice too. I had a lovely Quattro Formagio which was so good I want to go back next week too. My family and I really had a great time at Pizza on the Wood, and we will all be back soon!
