The ViewLondon Review
Almost always busy in the evenings, probably on account of its sprawling outdoor space and well advertised food deals, Pizzeria on the Green benefits from its location.
The Venue
Pizzeria on the Green has a great location on the main thoroughfare by Clapham South tube station, right next to the popular bar, Gigalum. A large outdoor area is always busy in the summer months and is a good space with plenty of tables. It’s just a little unfortunate that it sits up against a main road that’s constantly jammed with traffic. Still, a lengthy strip of pavement goes some way to separating diners from the constant throng of buses dawdling past.
The choice of a red neon sign is a little strange, giving the restaurant a cheap appearance that doesn’t really do the venue justice. Inside is a simple space with neat little rows of tables, ever so slightly too close together. The neutral cream and white walls are covered in an array of attractive artwork, which warms up the room nicely and does a good job of creating a cosy place to enjoy pizza in.
The Atmosphere
Pizzeria on the Green attracts a lot of local regulars on account of its good money-off deals and you’ll mainly find a young mix of Claphamites, be it groups of friends catching up or couples enjoying a cheap and easy meal out. The staff are often hurried in the peak times after work and early evening but they manage a smile and a warm greeting, which doesn’t go unnoticed.
The Food
The money off deals such as half price pizza days are clearly displayed outside, pulling in hungry diners not sure of where they want to eat. And the food is actually pretty good. You can’t go wrong with crisp, buttery garlic bread for £2.50, after all.
The pizzas come in at the £8-£11 mark and offer a good selection of toppings, if slightly uninventive, revolving around the classics. Their Fiorentina (£9.70) offers a generous helping of eggs, adding depth to the dish and making it filling, complemented by fresh spinach that adds a healthy dimension to the pizza. Well, you can tell yourself that anyway. The gooey, creamy mozzarella is well balanced so as not to overpower the pizza. Alternatively, the Amalfitana (£9.80) is a spicy dish with a pleasant heat from the chillies beside a generous helping of fresh ham, pleasantly salty capers and rich mozzarella cheese.
The Drink
The drinks menu is very simple with four whites and four reds ranging from £16-£20 with the majority of them priced at the lower end of the price scale. They also do half bottles of house red and white for £11.50 but it’s a little disappointing that the only wine available by the glass is also the house, at a rather steep £7. They do a good range of bottled beers however, including Becks, San Miguel, Sol and Grolsch, as well as a rotating Italian option. The coffee selection, though, is disappointing for an Italian eatery with only espressos and cappuccinos offered.
The Last Word
Pizzeria on the Green is an easy dinner spot if you’re either in the area or heading to the nearby bars later in the evening. The pizzas are good and if you go when they’re doing money-off deals it can work out as great value.
