AWFUL service.
We had reserved a table, waited 30 mintues after our reserved time but didn't mind that. When we sat down, we were rushed through our meal, waiters hovered around the table and swiped our plates as soon as we had finished. We asked for the dessert and tea menu and were told "we are not serving dessert today" as they were trying to rush people in and out. We weren't even allowed to order tea.
Rude, abrupt, poor service. Shame because the food isn't too bad. But why pay so much money only to be rushed through what could be a nice meal. Needless to say we didn't pay service charge and won't be going back.
I wish we had listened to the majority reviews and avoided this place. I hope this review saves somebody else wasting their money.
Worst dining experience of my life! Food came out cold, some food didn't come out at all and when we spoke to the manager at the end about to pay most of the bill she decided to shout at us and tell us if we didn't pay the full bill she would lock us in the restaurant. Have never come across someone so rude before in my life. The food wasn't too bad but the service was the worst ever
I had an amazing time! I booked this place knowing nothing about it for 10 people, everyone enjoyed it. The food was great, the portion size was really big I couldn't finish it even my boyfriend was stuffed. The decor was very sophisticated and had good ambiance.
Very enjoyable, but they should really have a website to see a menu!
Absolutely love this place. Sleek, stylish and trendy. Three levels of dining space to choose from, personally prefer the underground level where it's a little more private. Staff are very receptive and food tastes amazing, despite the more high end price. But to be honest the price matches the look. My favourite place to eat with my girlfriend! I recommend you give it a go.
Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had, not only at a Chinese restaurant but at ANY restaurant. First of all, the décor, much like the food is basically a cheap rip off of Hakkasan, which is fine except the lighting levels are so low that I couldn’t even read the menu. If I had had a torch that night, I would have brought it out. I would have then been able to actually read the outrageous steep prices (which are printed in font size 8) and got the hell out of there.
The flavor of the food was adequate – not great but edible. Unfortunately it was stone cold by the time it got to our table. The portions are also so meagre that by the time we had finished our 6 dishes, we were more than ready to have desserts. However, we were then informed that there would be no desserts as there was a queue outside waiting for the table. Before we could even reply, the manageress had the audacity to ask if would be “alright” for her to get us the bill.
We paid the bill – which came to over £120 for 3 people and as soon as the money was taken away from the table, the manageress hovered over our table as if to say “Get out now”. I downed the rest of my drink, almost choking in the process and was then almost flattened by the stampede of patrons she was ushering in to fill our table.
I appreciate that it was Chinese New Year’s Eve and that they were busy but we had paid good money to eat there and a certain standard is expected. I won’t be going back to Plum Valley and would suggest that you steer clear also – unless you’re into abusing yourself
I had the opportunity to be in China town last week and Plum Valley stood out as a fine dining establishment. The decor interior and exterior was really nice, and we were greeted by a host. The food was amazing and almost worth the price paid; except it all arrived at separate times. If we were told this was going to happen we would not have had a problem. In addition the waiters and waitresses lacked communication skills and often abruptly put the food down on the table, not telling us what it was, yet alone giving it to the right person.
We were never asked whether the food was satisfactory and the staff greatly lacked attention to detail, including charging us for an item we did not have. This was not greatly an issue, but the embarrassment was caused when the member of staff went around to every single one of her colleagues to check whether we had. Speaking very loudly in her native tongue. If you like the idea of eating overpriced food and not receiving much of a service and then paying a 12.5% service charge; Plum Valley is for you.
We do not plan on going there again. As with all restaurants you should always take reviews with a pinch of salt, but going to Plum Valley will leave you out of pocket.
It's funny how the reviews are either 1 star or 5 stars! Well, I'll have to add to the 5 star rating.
The first time we went there, we just happened to wander by and thought we should take a chance even though you can't see into the restaurant from the outside.
Initially we were put off by the decor -- nice, but a bit trendier and upscale than we were looking for -- but now that we've had the fantastic food, who cares what it looks like?
You can't beat the dim sum menu, and the peking duck was succulent. I completely agree with previous reviewers' favorites -- the black cod dumpling and wasabi prawn are mouth-watering.
Some people seem to complain that it is expensive, but we actually thought it was pretty reasonable, and when the food is this good, we are happy to pay a premium.
We will definitely go back and take more friends! I just hope it doesn't start to get so crowded that we can't get a table -- it was significantly more crowded the last time we went than the first time.
Overpriced. Tasteless food. A complete rip-off. Don't let the fancy interiors and the dark wood effect with dim-lighting fool you.
The decor is definitely on the plus side - esp seeing as it is in Chinatown. Full marks for that. The service however is another matter. Clueless waitresses roaming around chattering away to each other very audibly in Chinese.
The food is overpriced for a start and the quality is not in keeping with the price at all.
Main courses are from £18 onwards!!?? You may as well go to Yauatcha and the other upmarket restaurants.
a good place for dim sum, at a reasonable price, with excellent service. j
This Chinatown restaurant stands out amoung the other traditional Chinese eaterys you expect to find along the strip yet fits so well with the night life of a busy London. The Interior of dark chic design and the lightening perfect for most occasions at this venue.
We were greeted by a very welcoming Hostess who while taking us to our seats on the third gave us a little tour of the place. The menu is as you would expect but was superbly prepared and well presented.
Kung Pow Chicken and the addition of Pineapple with the sweet and sour worked a treat. We mistook the noodles with chicken in blackbean sauce as a main dish as the portions of meat were so generous.
Wine too was what you expected but the Chilean Merlot was very pleasing to drink at a budget unlike some house reds you can find in other places.
The service was perfect and even enjoyed some friendly banter with the staff and other Plum goers. Would strongly recommend this place for couples or a small gathering to make use of the corner seating, comfortable sofas with the revolving server tray.
We tried this chic restaurant last week and would love to recommend to any dimsum lover! 6 of us were seated at a large round corner table on 1/F. The dinning is stylish, modern and very comfortable. We ordered a table-full of dim sums as there are so many interesting new dishes and everyone wants to try something different. The prawn ravioli with xo sauce, sake prawn dumpling, thai chicken dumpling and foie gros siu long bao were my favourites. However, cream custard bun, wasabi prawn dumpling and scallop cheung fun were also very popular. We really had great time and will arrange next gathering there too.
The dark woody interior and lovely soft seats were the best things about Plum Valley.Honey roast pork (cha siu) - a Cantonese staple - was mediocre, served on a large leaf of lettuce torn from the plant. Sha Cha beef sauteed with onion and pepper was adequately tender but cloyingly sweet. I counted around 12 slices of beef.Pak choi was nicely flavoured with garlic but soggy from being overcooked.Roast duck - another Cantonese staple - consisted of several bony pieces, a few fatty ones and a couple of burnt ends. I sent it back.
A pot of tea was charged @ per person although it was re-filled without further charge. Service was friendly but slow and inattentive at a time when the restaurant was not completely full. The toilets were not gender-assigned and were dirty; more toilet paper had to be requested.
This dining place is a fraud, trying to ape a better class of restaurant and failing on every point that matters. For all the hype, the food is basic and not innovative, certainly not justified by its expensive tag. You could get similarly good (or bad!) food from one of the many fast-food Chinese diners and still be left with change for dessert. The dim sum may be better (different chefs are required but I am now reluctant to try the dim sum). Do approach dinner with great caution.
On arrival the staff are extremely friendly and inviting. They put my girlfriend & I near the front window in very comfortable diner-style seats. Liking our surroundings and being reminded of Hakkasan and her sister restaurant Yauatcha, the dark wood and stone interior made us feel like we could easily stay there all night. We dived into the menu which, to our surprise, we had to debate about what we wanted because there simply was such a good selection of everything.
Reasonably priced for this type of restaurant.
Food arrived, no complaints. Cooked exactly how we would expect it to be.
I would highly recommend this place and would say that if your looking for an alternative to Hakkasan or Yauatcha, but would prefer a quieter, less pretentious crowd and a more private dining experience, in the heart of Chinatown, Plum Valley would be right up your alley.
It is without doubt a beautiful setting but the food we had was poor quality. I visited this restaurant on the 6th November prior to the cinema and regretted my choice. I'd read that it had 'the best dim sum in Chinatown' but in reality it was far from it. We had to ask for the dim sum menu (not offered straight away) and selected quite a few dishes. It was a bit hit and miss but overall I've had much better from my local takeaway. Some were unrecognisable and very boney.
We tried this new restaurant last week. We were really impressed by the quality of their dim sums, all delicious and beautifully presented. A very enjoyable experience for us. As we've been told, they serve dim sum for the dinner too! Staffs are very friendly and helpful. We will definitely going back again. Wasabi prawn dumpling is the best!
This restaurant is just what chinatown does not need, it more about packaging and service rather than great tasting food. The food was shockingly bad: prawns were undercooked; everything was too salty; the congee was like soggy rice in water; the tea (which you pay per person per pot) was weak, to name a few. Ok, so the prices were affordable, but on average more expensive than the majority of the places in chinatown, I would not have minded if the quality of the food had matched. So the one star awarded was for the decor and the service, however, maybe they should rename it 'Bum Valley as everything that they produced was pretty crap.
What really made this dining experience worth the full 5* was the staff. I've been to many Chinese restaurants and I hate to say this but the service is usually mediocre at best, so naturally I wasn't expecting much when entering this restaurant however I was pleasantly surprised by the service of their waiting staff, they were polite, professional, attentive (not overly) and would give what seemed like genuine smiles here and there. The food was delicious and served in contemporary chinaware. The interior may be a little dark but it definitely stands out amongst the other restaurants nearby in a good way.
I went to Plum Valley in April and I have intentions on going again some time soon but what worries me is the thought of staff turnover.
I thought the food here was very tasty with quick and friendly service.
