As usual Poppies has followed in the foot steps of many other fish and chip shops that open up; take away portions that are of a decent size and fish that is fresh. But it all only lasts for so long.
I tried Poppies when it had opened and I was impressed with the chips. They were not drenched in oil and the amount that I was given - for a regular portion - was good. I went back a few times and tried the battered sausage, easy to eat unlike some places where you feel like you are eating an uncooked sausage covered in oil and batter. Even the fish was great. The cod was succulent and once again not over oily.
I truly thought that I had found a decent fish and chip shop.

Now I have been back in the past 2 months, the last time I went there was October and I had already started to notice the decline.
In January I popped in for take away chips and sausage in batter and my heart sunk once I got the food back to mine. The amount of chips were no where near to what they used to serve, and yes the sausage was horrible.
I tried again today, ordering cod and chips. I had to wait for the chips to be cooked. Once they were cooked and dumped into their place of rest the lady behind the counter instantly started shoveling them into a box. Now I say shovelling but for the amount that I was given it was more like a quick dig. The chips were so oily that the oil had gone through the bottom of the box and was making contact with the paper bag. The fish was dire. It was dry and taste less, it did not break apart as a nice piece of fresh fish does. Also it stuck to the inside of my mouth.

This will be the last time that I ever go there.

I have to add that the service from the lady behind the counter was not impressive, she practically threw my bag onto the counter and did not acknowledge me with a either a thank you or good bye.

Used to be an ok place but not anymore. 15£ for fish and chips? And the mushy peas used to come along, now, 2,5£ extra. The fish was massively oversalted. I don't mind paying for quality but this is just a ripoff.

Sorry we forgot to amend the star rating on the review we just posted! Should definitely be 5 star for Poppies Fish & Chips restaurant for the choice and quality of food, not to mention the the whole retro 50's look and feel inside.

Wow! What a great relaxing place to sit and eat some delicious fresh fish, or should I say huge portion of tasty haddock. My wife and I loved the whole atmosphere and themed restaurant including the waitresses uniforms. Thoroughly recommend a visit. Look forward to returning soon!

Was dragged along by a friend and had little expectations from this place - but loved every minute of my experience.
Was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night with a mixed crowd.
The Manager recommended I have the Haddock. It is the best piece of fish I have ever had. I ate it with some mushy peas. My friend joked it is that I had eaten a shark - referring to the sheer size of the haddock.
Manager personally served us, funny bloke, had good banter.
Would recommend for a great evening out.

Went back today after work with a colleague and ordered their Sticky Toffee Pudding and Strawberry and Chocolate Minghella ice cream. I was very pleased witht he fact that they serve the award winning Minghella Ice Cream, which is free from artificial and GM ingredients.

I highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding which is served with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream. Its richness absolutely divine.

This was my second time at the restaurant and is officially the the best place i have had fish and chips from.

Stumbled across this restaurant by chance whilst trying to find Brick Lane for a Curry. A real gem of a place which took me back to my childhood.
The staff were friendly and helpful coupled with an amazing decor with lots of bric-a-brac on the shelves and Memorabilia
Music was not to my taste. but the food was exceptionally well prepared.
The fish was fresh and full of taste, the chips were thick and fluffy, with these novel little pouches of condiments.
Fish and chips doesn't get much smarter than this.
The queues of people at this place says it all.

Visited Poppies on Saturday with some friends and was pleasantly pleased with the decor not to mention the Jukebox playing all the classics.
I ordered a grilled Lemon Sole with Chips. We waited an average 20 mins as the fish was freshly prepared. The fish was perfectly prepared and was crisp on the top and served with tartare sauce.

My friends ordered Haddock and Cod amongst themselves with chips and mushy peas. The batter was crisp and fresh and a good size. No room was left for deserts.

I will have to go back and try their deserts and will post what i think.

Overally very impressed with the service and also with the fact that they also provide a take away service.

Sadly, there aren't many proper fish & chip restaurants left in London, as many end up serving mainly kebabs and fried chicken. This means there isn't much in the way of competition - particularly so close to Brick Lane, where there is the dominating presence of Indian cuisine.

I got take away from Poppies a few days ago. I had cod & chips, and my friend had scampi. We had to wait ten minutes for our food, and though his was ok, my cod was watery and tasteless and the chips were soggy. If this had been some cheap place I wouldn't have bothered to write a review, but this is an expensive place - we paid over £15 for two very average meals.

The vintage style decor and atmosphere are great, and in such a stylish area I'm sure that alone will get people going, but they really need to step up their game. Better food, lower prices, faster service are all needed BUT I am so appalled by the manager's response to the lady below and her complaint about the sausages, for that reason ALONE I will never be going back. What an appalling attitude. Disgusting. Go to Cafe 1001 instead, their BBQ style food is great value and very tasty!

My oh my....the bad English from the proprietor (not a problem in itself) but when the bad English is so similar in style to the reviewers coming immediately after a bad review, you can only surmise that the restaurant is desperate enough to write its own reviews. And I am shocked at the terrible response by the proprietor to the lady complaining about the sausages!

I am appalled by the manager's response to my comment. I have no interest in attending your restaurant again so did not feel the need to alert environmental health. However your attitude like your food is sickening. I hope you receive a visit soon from the Environmental Inspector and I hope your HACCP is fully intact and up to date. I further hope that your staff have completed their required CG Food and Hygiene courses and that they have legal status to work in your establishment. I took my children to the doctor and it was confirmed that they had contracted staphylococcus which as you DO know is a 24 hour bug from meat which has been allowed to cool to below 73 degrees. Of course you know all of this don't you?
Indeed I am a busy person so thank me for not bothering to report you. Good luck with trying to stay open in this difficult climate. Restaurants are going bust at an alarming rate. Of course your charm should see you through....NOT. Regards, Mrs. (or possibly Ms or Miss).

Had Cod and Chips from here and I was left feeling cheated and conned like wanted to go and get real fish and chips. Soft soggy chips, tough tasteless over-cooked cod in soggy batter. Not what they should be serving in such a prominent location. . . Unless things improve I won't be going back again.

I am eating Cod and Chips and even though sadly the bussiness around the restaurant have been affected by the big flow of customers from Poppies... this is not a good reason to invent these things. A review should be neutral presenting good and bad at the same time , from an objective point of view .
I wish the other restaurants around luck in having customers and maybe if they would spend their time more in the restaurant and less on websites making bad reviews , their restaurants would be busy like ours.

It seems that the owner has replied to my review in the same terrible english that he has used to reply to all the other negative reviews. As another reviewer points out this is not a problem in itself, but the owner seems to think I am from a competitor restaurant, which maybe the cause of the poor quality of food. What I mean is that when a restaurant choses to ignore this valuable customer feedback it is bound to have a negative impact on the food quality. To be clear I do not own or work in a restaurant or the catering business. I work in fashion and and live locally. I am meerly a customer who has been both surprised and disappointed with the food quality in Poppies. I would hope that the restaurant takes on any negative feedback and improves, but by the sound of the other reviews it doesn't seem to be getting better. I have down graded my rating to 1 star now after getting this paranoid response from what appears to be the owner. My advice to eradicate these poor reviews is to improve you food and service. I wish you luck.

Had lunch here on Bank Holiday Monday and we opted for the homemade fishcakes, chips and mushy peas / sausage in batter & chips. Although we were quite suprised at some of the prices here (£1.95 for a diet coke?!) we cannot fault the food. The fishcakes were fresh, tasty and you could tell they had been home made. The chips were chunky and tasted like "proper" fish shop chips. The mushy peas, again pricey at £2.45 were nice and you got quite a big portion. I did enjoy my meal here, but the main gripe for me was the price. I don't mind paying slightly over the odds because of the location, and the food was good quality, but being charged £1.50 for one piece of buttered bread! Just took the mickey in my opinion. You get free bread in most pie and mash shops, and if the owner has been in business in the East End for 35years as claimed, he would do well to remember that these are little touches that make a really great business.

Mrs, I am the manager of Poppie's restaurant and when this happens the restaurant must be warned immediately. But as we have received 5 STAR Health and Safety from the Tower Hamlet Council , your comment is unlikely to be true. If this would be true , as it is an important issue ( specially regarding children ) the management should have been informed immediately to take action. Furthermore, I don't belive that a mother whose children got sick from sausages would spend time writing bad reviews on the internet instead of attending to the children.

Have a nice day and look after your children!

Very disappointing!
Went to Poppies on a Sunday night, a week after the opening.
I wanted to order fried whitebait and a grilled lemon sole. They did not have any of the them. I then ordered a classic cod and chips with mushy peas. The cod was okay, but the chips were well undercooked and too big. The mushy peas were a joke. I was all liquid, with no seasoning whatsoever and two peas floating around: absolutely no taste...I can easily imagine that the 3 previous reviews were written by the restaurant owner itself. Also, the girl at the till was very slow: hence the long queue and she couldn't remember our orders after our 10 minutes wait...
Positive point: nice decoration

I live near Brick Lane and since they've opened the restaurant , me and my wife have been eating there every friday evening. I think this person was very drunk and maybe he got the wrong restaurant name. The fish is always fresh and they offer a broad variety of side orders. Since 3 months of eating there we're tried almost every fish from the menu and we have never been dissapointed. The waiters are always friendly and helpful even though sometimes they seem a bit overzealous. Looking forward for next friday and for their lovely sticky toffee pudding!

First Class fish and Chips, the best in London!
Decor and atmosphere is spot on, front of house gave a warm reception, gimmicks like the Jukebox, and 50's memorabilia has carefully been thought out. Fish is cooked to perfection, and the mushy peas are a must! Do not be put off by the queue, it is WELL worth the wait!
Would highly recommend!

Ate here today. Fantastic food and cool 50's decor. Whitebait was to die for and my wife loved the jellied eels. Main course Cod was light and tasty and my wife's grilled Halibut was perfectly done and good value. All highly recommended.

Went to the opening of Poppies.
Fridays can go back to being traditional fish and chips night.
I was offered the choice of having my lemon sole grilled or fried and to top it off had a selection of booze.
I met Pop himself (what a charmer), loved the history and the life size juke box. Its a mix between an american diner and an english fish and chip shop.
Great food prepared to perfection and value for money.
