A ‘posh’ pub that hasn’t resorted to gastropub flounce to keep things upmarket.

The Venue
The Prince Arthur is a fancy pub if ever you saw one – but it’s a fancy pub with heart. There’s none of that ‘neutral colourscheme’ nonsense here. Instead, from the sizeable outdoor area with pretty wooden benches and flashes of flora to the heavy wooden panels of the interior, this is a pub that understands that traditional doesn’t have to mean tired. The exterior is pretty with period windows and Victorian lamps, and inside the extraordinarily clean bar and tables show the care that goes into this place. Plants on the bar, in the windows and on some of the tables add a light edge to the space and the traditional paintings on the walls show off their love of culture – or at least the replication of culture.

The Atmosphere
Two words: Table. Service. Yup, the days of queuing at the bar are happily behind you at the Prince Arthur as all food and drink is offered at your table by the friendly and super-efficient waiting staff. This – incredibly – also extends to the outdoor area, which means you don’t have to miss a precious moment of soaking up the rays outside in order to fetch the next round. Bliss. Just be warned, it can get a little busy, particularly when it’s nice weather out, so get there early if you’re planning a post-work tipple.

The Food
There’s a lot to be said of the food offering at the Prince Arthur. The prices are low (all below a tenner), the food is ‘proper’ British fare and the menu changes monthly. Expect options like fish and chips (of course!), toad in the hole and pies. However, this is tempered by large sharing platters of antipasti – again all under a tenner – containing an exciting array of meats and cheeses.

The Drink
The Prince Arthur is a pub that hasn’t ignored the grape, with a lengthy wine list that’s well described and covers a selection of grapes and regions to suit most tastes. They also specialise in seasonal drinks with Pimms and lemonade covering the alfresco tables in the warmer weather and hot toddies or mulled wine keeping bellies warm when the cold comes in. However, it is the beer that does the biggest trade all-year-round with four ales on tap, including London Pride, Greene King IPA and Timothy Taylor Landlord alongside a final guest beer that rotates every month.

The Last Word
The Prince Arthur is a real treat, particularly since you don’t even have to queue for the privilege of buying your pint. Pimms in the summer, mulled wine in the winter – they've got it all covered.
