Had a great evening here the other night. Ate in the upstairs dining room and the food was fantastic. Really couldn't choose what to have as I fancied everything on the menu! As a bit of a foodie, I was really impressed to see a simple, but interesting menu. We ended up sharing the asparagus with egg and the goose rillettes and for main we had the brill with chicken gravy and black pudding as well as the Red Devon steak with bone marrow. The service was low key, but efficient and our waiter was very charming. Highly recommendable.
have eaten here twice, and will be back again. Fabulous food, excellent service. Wonderful ambiance, true gem. Superb wine list, extremely knowledgeable - staff star food and service.
Had a wonderful meal here with friends recently. The service was truly outstanding and our waitress deserves particular praise. The food was every bit as good as the TimeOut award would suggest and we all left feeling very happy. My seabass on gazpacho went down very well considering the heat outside and each of my friends raved about their dishes, especially the desserts! Decor is also worth noting...both bar and dining room are really well fitted out.
Nice name of the resturaunt. X
The Princess is a let down. At certain times of the day you are not allowed to sit on the tables unless you are going to eat. This is a pub isn't it? It should be relaxed and you should be given the choice, the truth is that you may sit at a table for a drink and order a food after a while, but here is not possible. The food they serve is minimal! Not what you want from a gastro pub. Stay away from the cheese board! It's just a board with grapes, apricots and three ridiculous pieces of cheese! You get more fruit on the board than cheese! It's shocking!
Great place with good food and service. Nicely fitted out with comfortable tables and chairs, an enormous bar with loads of whisky and great vintage lighting.
Food was well presented, well cooked and tasted amazing. Portion size about right.
Service came with a smile and was welcoming.
Not the cheapest night out but good value non the less.
Good decor with a very nice vibe (The Princess is pretty much always busy), the staff are friendly and helpful and the food top notch! Definitely the best gastropub in the area!!
I had my 40th birthday with friends at The Princess and all of us had the most pleasurable evening (some were French and very snobby and they had nothing but good things to say!).
The dining room was cosy and well decorated, the staff delightful and the food tasty, well presented and good value.
I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend The Princess to anyone.
Totally agree with Su, although I ate upstairs. Found the service really attentive and friendly and thought it was really good value for money. I had the smoked salmon roulade with elderflower sauce for starter and my boyfriend had the foie gras parfait and both were really good. He had pork belly and I had the lamb and it was so tasty and tender. Really cannot recommend their lemon tart enough either. Had a nice bottle of red wine with our food and the bill came to just under £85. Well worth a visit.
I visited recently with a couple of friends and had a really nice time. We ate in the downstairs bar and found the staff and food to be outstanding. There was a pleasant buzzy atmosphere with a good mix of suits and Shoreditch types. The bill came to less than £100 for three of us and we had two courses each and two bottles of wine! Great value for money!!
The bar staff are obsessed with making you sit where you don't want to. Went in with 5 people, 3 were following, even though the place was EMPTY they insisted on seating us on the smallest table available.
Very weird experience. Sat crowded together in an empty bar.
If your looking for a place with a warm and friendly atmosphere do not come here. Basil Fawlty seems to have trained the staff.
I had the misfortune to visit this pub earlier this week and I wont be going back! We walked in (10 of us) and were not allowed to have a drink at the bar.
We had to sit down. So we sat down and then a few minutes later were told to move to another table. No idea why. We were moved to a table that should be for 6 people.
We explained we had another 5 people coming shortly. They said this was fine and they would squeeze more seats round. We objected, but had no option.
When the others arrived, we were told they could squeeze round due to fire risk. So the other had to sit on a different table! Drinks were brought to the table that were not ordered.
No atmosphere. Bad service. Rude and patronising staff. Avoid at all costs! I will be!
We had been to the princess before a few times just for drinks downstairs, and ate for the first time in the upstairs restaurant last night.
The food was really tasty and the service was brilliant. It was really nice to be able to have some drinks in a relaxed friendly atmosphere and then enjoy a great meal in a cosy restaurant.
I would highly recommend it!
Went for dinner in the restaurant/dining room the other night and had such a lovely time. The food is amazing for what you pay and the dining area is beautiful. Service and atmosphere were both great and the loo's were lovely too...
Went to the princess the other night and having been there before about a year ago I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food, wine and beer on offer. It has been recently taken over and the first thing they did was fix the toilets which are now brand new and exceptionally clean. The new staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. The food on the new menu was fantastic. We ate upstairs in the restaurant and were very happy with both starter and main meal. They have retained the old Victorian feel. A great place to eat for lunch or dinner and to also join the happy crowds that gather here for after work drinks. Will definitely be back.
