The ViewLondon Review
The Quality Chop House’s original venue serves new British cuisine in Farringdon. The VenueThere’s a couple of side by side rooms that are long and narrow with uncomfortable pew-style seating, which doesn’t exactly make for relaxed surroundings - although they have added cushions. Try and get a booth. On a cold day it gets very chilly as the dining room is right by the draughty front door. The venue relies on its Dickensian history and charm, so the comfort level is unlikely to change.
The AtmosphereCoupled with the chilly seating, the service is equally frosty if you’re not a regular. Many people just stop by for a quick drink, and it is used as a quick lunch place by local workers. It’s also a good place to take out of town visitors for a drink and a bite, if they want an Olde English experience.
The FoodThere is a variety of everyday English nosh, such as eggs, bacon, chips, Irish oysters, steaks, lamb chops and fishcakes, and the full English breakfast often gets raves. The Quality Chop House also serves corned beef hash and a notable steak and kidney pie. There aren’t many light options but there is a fish dish. All the dishes are perfectly good, but they’re nothing special and not particularly good value for your money.
The DrinkThe Quality Chop House has a decent wine list with lots of new world wines, although they are pricey, as well as English beers and soft drinks. Recommended cocktails include a particularly good Bloody Mary.
The Last WordThe Quality Chop House can be nice for a change or to impress an out-of-town guest, but it’s not a relaxing place to spend the evening and the food could be better.
