With a sprawling beer garden, richly cosy interior and top notch gastro pub grub, Red Lion is a fine choice.

The Venue
Located on the main road between Hammersmith and Roehampton, Red Lion may seem like just another High Street pub. But take the time to discover it backs on to the London Wetlands Centre and is only a short stroll from the banks of the Thames, and you’ll rubber necking for a table in no time. The interior is all dark wood furniture, candlelit tables and large leather sofas you just know you could sink in to. It’s not hugely imaginative but it’s warm and inviting. If the weather is fine you’d be mad not to venture out into the large beer garden.

The Atmosphere
Red Lion is a family affair, with pushchairs littering the beer garden and variety of small children and dogs running around. But rather than being irritating, it just adds to the feeling that you’re at an alfresco get together at a mate’s place rather than a crowded pub. The family friendly policy doesn’t seem to put off other punters and the place is just as crowded with loved-up couples and large groups. The staff are both extremely efficient and friendly and you’re sure to feel welcome as soon as you enter.

The Food
If gastro pub gourmet is your thing then don’t miss an opportunity to dine at Red Lion. At first glance the menu looks to be filled with over the top dishes, but peruse a little longer and you’ll see that all of the classics like burgers, sausages and chips are there, albeit with a modern, gastro twist. The roasts are not to be missed on a Sunday, but get in quick as they tend to sell out early. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food, while it’s slightly more expensive than other establishments in the area, it’s well worth it.

The Drink
Drinks are on the expensive side and are more in line with restaurant rather than pub prices. Prices are consistent with the quality of both the food and surroundings though, and there is a good selection of wine, spirits, beers and ales – all served with a smile.

The Last Word
The welcoming atmosphere and delectable menu of Red Lion make it a hidden London gem.
