The ViewLondon Review
A hidden gem in the quiet suburban streets of Mayfair, the Red Lion is the ideal place for a quiet drink away from the hustle and bustle of London. The VenueThe location of the pub makes you think it’s a secret getaway; perched on a small hill, very close to Park Lane, and surrounded by posh townhouses, the Red Lion stands out as something different. Inside, much of its original decor remains the same – low ceilings, rickety wooden booths, sturdy dark tables and quaint little decorations. Nothing has be refurbished in a while, as is evident from the slightly worn appearance of the furniture, but this only adds to its character, making it free of fuss and bother.
The AtmosphereSitting in a typical country pub within the middle of a hectic city makes you feel at peace instantly, and the lack of noise helps this along. The clientele are likeminded souls who have come here to get away from it all with a pint of lager and a newspaper. The posh locals that frequent the Red Lion are a down to earth, quiet bunch that want to enjoy their drink in a relaxed environment, but the quietness may be stifling for some who want a more fun-filled night out. As it’s off the beaten track, you won’t find any random stragglers looking for a good time or tourists wanting to sample real British Ale, so the Red Lion retains its secluded ambience.
The DrinkThe favourite tipple of the punters at this pub is the bar’s selection of real ales and beers. The ales are well kept and the pride of the pub, but it also has a small but good choice of wines that take into account most tastes and regions. The prices aren’t cheap, which is expected of the area, but for the quality it’s certainly fair. The dining room at the back serves up typical British food as well in a similarly calm atmosphere.
The Last WordThe Red Lion is a lovely pub for a pint of ale in a serene atmosphere to escape the buzz of London.
