Traditional London boozer on Tottenham Court Road with friendly staff and reasonably priced food and drink with an emphasis on supporting home countries during sporting events.

The Venue
You’ll reach the Rising Sun after navigating your way through Hi- Fi Hell, that seemingly endless strip of electronics stores that line both sides of Tottenham Court Road. It’s a pub which, unlike other establishments, has clearly not felt any pressure to move forward and enter a contemporary age, relying on locals and location to keep the tills ringing.

The Atmosphere
During a sporting event, such as the recent Rugby World Cup which had the management put imposing National flags up in the window and attach bunting across the ceiling supports, the Rising Sun can maintain quite a lively buzz and the affable bar staff contribute too. However, there is an old man pub feeling about the place during other times – probably due to the old men in the pub – and the well-worn carpets, old furnishings and dank colours only contribute to this conclusion.

The Food
The menu can’t be praised for originality but the portions are generous and there are plenty of mouth-watering options. Particular stand-out meals among the sausage and mash, sandwiches and pies include chicken pesto tagliatelle and baked avocado pear filled with a pepper risotto topped with stilton sauce, a creative option for vegetarians.

The Drink
There is a good selection of red and white wines from around the world such as the Californian Ruby Cabernet and the Australian Rosemount Chardonnay plus special deals on jugs of beer. There are also two guest beers or ales on tap alongside the resident Deuchars and London Pride. If they happen to be serving Cumberland Ale on your visit, indulge in a crafty pint. In addition to this, they also serve an enticing selection of alcohol smoothies giving punters the unique opportunity to feel healthy and inebriated at the same time.

The Last Word
A handy little pub in the centre of the capital boasting tasty pub grub that although won’t set the world alight, is a decent pit-stop nonetheless.
