We went here for my partners birthday. The service was great with friendly staff although the food was VERY disappointing for a special occasion.
Scallops are chewy and overcooked and have loads of grit in and the lobster was overcooked also. The rib-eye steak is just not worth the modest price tag either and one of our party had to send her steak back twice as the chef didn't know how to cook it 'blue'. She went without in the end.
Overall food was more of what you would expect in a gastropub.
We all loved the setting and had a nice table though and we were given wine as compensation and there was no problem in having the unsatisfactory dishes taken off our bill. The food just let the evening down.
Went there last night for my partner's Birthday celebration with her parents who are lovers of the place. I must admit to being VERY disappointed and this is not the first time. Two years ago this was a splendid place to eat but last night I was surprised to say that things have not improved. The staff are nice, the menu is good but when the food arrived it was poor. The Scallops were tiny and the portion was small, the Barnsley Chop has been on the menu forever, a favorite no doubt but still a little tough and served up on a tasteless bubble and squeak. The Veal was just a horrible mess of a meal, it seemed to have been deep fried in old oil of some kind, I'm sure it wasn't (or hope so) but nevertheless it tasted terrible. We didn't hang around for a desert and left feeling let down. Now we used to love that place, it was a regular haunt for us but I cannot see us going there anymore if this is what it is going to be like. Maybe we should have taken the hit and gone up the road to the Spread Eagle which I hear is getting back to it's best.
I love The Rivington because the food's delicious, the service is polite, attentive and helpful and the drinks are interesting at the bar! We ordered chocolate shots (the name escapes me) and they were to die for!
You can tell the standard of a restaurant is high when the waitors and waitresses know a lot about what they are serving and are able to provide interesting information about the local produce that is used in the food/drink. Also- generous helpings!!A great evening, we can't wait to go back!
Stylish venue, fantastic food. Service from the staff is a bit to be desired, a bit too much attitude considering the prices they charge. I didn't appreciate being look down on for not ordering wine with my food (mid afternoon).
Went there with the wife last week. Started with cocktails at the bar all made with fresh fruit and intresting combanations. I had the lamb which was cooked just right and she "the wife" had fish and chips. It was massive, crispy and a great bit of fish.
Service was friendly but casual. Looks posh through the window but it was a great vibe inside. Judge for your self
I saw the last review, and thought it was a bit harsh. I have been to Rivington Grill on many occasions now and always enjoyed it. The lunch I had was soft herrings roes, followed by seabass with potatoes and green beans which was delicious.
The staff are friendly and they always say goodbye with a smile. The Rivington Grill has not been around very long, but I hope it stays as Greenwich has been crying out for something good.
I visited the Greenwich branch of Rivington Grill on a Sunday in March at 7pm. This is the 8th time I have visited and I was looking forward to becoming a regular. However, what I have noticed is that the staff seem to make up their roles as they go along and are, frankly, disingenuous towards the customers. This is presumably as a result of being so successful, so quickly.
For instance, on Sunday, we were told that Greenwich no longer does a set menu. I thought the Sunday roast was a signature dish at Rivington Grill but it is now seemingly denied to the Greenwich clientele. Is this really true or just a cynical attempt to make us order from the a la carte menu on one of the busiest days of the year (Mother's Day)? On top of that, half the a la carte menu was unavailable, "we were so busy earlier" we were told with a smile, as though it was unexpected on such a day.
In addition, the ten percent discount for members of the adjacent cinema no longer applies, except on Mon-Thurs. Other examples of poor customer relations include an overpriced, low quality wine list, a 15% service charge added on when drinking at the bar (without informing the customer first and not applied at the Shoreditch branch) and being told a different story every time I ask the whereabouts of the newspapers that are supplied in Shoreditch. We are always shown the worst available table too, despite booking up to 10 days in advance.
The rich but less sophisticated Greenwich customer base are clearly considered easy pickings, in comparision to the competitive Shoreditch restaurant environment.
