Used to be consistently good but has really gone downhill in the past few months. I think they're relying on the fact that they're the only old-fashioned chippy in the west end. These days they give you regular fish and claim it's a large and sometimes the food is awful, sometimes good. Hit and miss.
Hello : Came as tourists from the states, looking for some great Fish and Chips. I think the food fit that category, but the place is pretty dumpy, even by budget standards. The table was clean, but the bath had inch deep water and no attempt to stem the cause (rain water coming in it appeared) or clean up. That was a definite safety issue on the steps leading down onto the bath floor ,and again, no attempt to help fix it or warn people. It is small, but, hey, I can understand if room is hard to come by in the business. And they keep the food coming and customers in and out in a good time.
The staff was very friendly, the service was fast and food was very very good. The locals were in attendance, which is a good sign. Sorry to hit on the decor and "ambiance", but it could def use some work. Funny, they have a restaurant postcard that shows a quaint scene of an old bike against a fish and chips restaurant wall, ,only problem is that it is NOT the Rock and Sole Plaice!! lol. Really, I would eat there again, but be warned and don't expect posh.
The fish and chips in "The Rock and Sole Plaice" is the best i have ever had. I really recommend it!For me it is not only restaurant where the food is nice, for me it is place where i met wonderful people, who treated me like family, and what is more -this is place where i met my love...So always when i think this place, i feel like crying...I know what i am telling because i used to work there for 8 years (during summer time). The atmophsere is wonderful, the staff is so friendly like family.Even i am a lawyer in Poland, i always miss this job, becuase i learnt there how to work and how to enjoy what You are doing whaterver You do. I had wonderful time with my Mum, who was also working there.Thank You Boss for everything!I will never forget You and Your place!Ismet Zijadiin- the owner- is doing His best to make fish and chips so wonderful and this restaurant is part of Him,He loves what He is doing and it the most important.Wioletta from Poland
The deep fried fish and chips are barely greasy and very tasty. The servings are fairly huge and worthy. Our kids enjoyed the outdoor eating section and we have observed some patrons who simply visit the place for a few beers because it's such a cozy corner at Endell Street.
There are also people who would stop by for a friendly chat or pick-up leftovers sometimes if the staff is not quick enough to remove the plates. Rock and Sole Plaice is quite a different experience from the usual fish & chips places.
The Rock and Sole Plaice have the best Fish and Chips ever! However the restaurant is so tiny that they should not allow smoking. Four Japanese tourists were all eating and smoking at the same time. Could not even see through the smoke. But the food was so amazing I will put myself through the smoke-hell again.
